First outing fail

Hi, well took my new Sunsport 350 and Mercury
9.9 out today. Started the OB after a few pulls, set off out to go around Torbay varying the revs as per running in instructions, when after about 10 mins it didn't sound so good I could smell petrol and it conked out. There was an oily film in the water around the OB presumably petrol. It wouldn't re start so started rowing. Waited for 10 mins or so and it started after a few pulls. I stopped the OB for 2 mins silence and after it wouldn't start again so rowed it back to the slipway. I should have pressed the throttle only button and put throttle on full but forgot to put it on full throttle, it started at home first time when I did this. When flushing it out at home I took the cover off and petrol could be seen dripping from the bottom of the carb. It's been stored and transported properly anyone else had this problem or have I done something wrong. Its brand new. The sunsport was excellent when it was running.

This is either a leak from the carb drain plug, the fuel inlet or float bowl gasket... or it's a problem with the float not shutting off the fuel. In either case a job for the supplying dealer.

Vey frustrating but well done for getting back to the slipway.

Yes it is most likely a stuck float or a split float allowing the carb bowl to flood and petrol to come out of the overflow.

It could also possibly be a poor gasket on the carb bowl

Thanks for the replies, is this common on a brand new OB. I guess the problem wasn't caused by me then.

This should absolutely not happen with a new outboard and is not common. Unless you have done something fundamentally stupid or taken it to pieces and reassembled it incorrectly I cannot see how it can be your fault. The laying it on the correct side is about the oil not petrol

When you pump the primer bulb generally you only need to give it a few pumps say up to 4 or 5 is generally plenty. Many small outboards don't need any pumping at all but unless you gave it many many pumps I would not think this is the issue

Hi, definitely laid on the correct side, pumped the bulb until firm. Not messed with it as brand new and wouldn't anyway as I'm mechanically useless. Waiting for response as had to email the shop as they are closed due to covid.

Returned the OB to the shop today although closed they let me return it today and will hopefully have it back Saturday.

Interestingly in the past few months I've dealt with one of this motor type where the float had distorted to go out of spec and cause over-fuelling... and had contact from a member suffering the same fault yet again on same motor where the dealer said a new carb was needed but I reckon a float/needle set would have sorted that one too.

I had a mower that did this ,dirty fuel was always the reason ,filter your petrol through a pair of the wifes old stockings (not fishnets ! )

Thanks for all the replies, I was touched by the two members who actually got upset about my predicament. Well guys blow your nose and wipe away your tears the problem has been solved. It was a faulty carb so will get it back on Saturday.

Have they put on a new carb or just repaired it.

I am pleased you have it sorted... Try it first in a barrel of water just to be sure

They are waiting parts which should arrive Friday so guessing it's a repair, will post when I know for sure.

Hi, just under 30 days, I guess you are going to suggest asking for a new one, but the new one could have the same problem and I'm happy that the repair will be good. I get your point though.

You’re entitled to a refund or a replacement. I’d have gone for the replacement rather than one that’s been “violated”
