Ha yes I know. But... Mrs F pointed out I was carrying 3 pairs of stainless shackles more suited to rigging a 30ft yacht, I had several fuel fittings for outboards I no longer own, a big packet of fuses and my OB doesn't have any, three spare spark plugs when two is plenty, big stainless washers that don't have much use on a SIB, enough batteries to power a torch, Garmin and LED flare for a week deserted on an island and so it went on. These things and many more pruned down meant the loss of a big waterproof box that enabled the loss of one dry bag.

In truth many of the things I carried were in case I was asked by others "have you got a xxx by any chance?" It's part of my nature to be able to respond to "have to got a rear prop UJ for a 1967 MGB in your tools by chance?" in the affirmative. But now I'm going selfish in my old age.

I may be going through the same stage of life. For years I carried an Extra Large Mars bar in case I chanced upon a broken down jet skier. Generous of Spirit to a fault, I'd have hated for them to get hungry while waiting for the lifeboat...

Now, I've eaten that Mars bar and won't be replacing it.

Ha yes. As the decades pass you get to realise you are either the organised person with the Mars bar... or the one always looking for a Mars bar. We usually have some great banter with other boaters at the slip... it will be a test of human nature to see if they are less chatty once I announce there is no Mars bar any more.

Ha lunch no longer provided FOC.

Anyway prop arrived today. Tohatsu OE slightly finer blade than Polastorm etc and hopefully will run true to pitch. Very much looking forward to see if going 8.5 - 7.5 will sort the "are we on the pane yet" debacle. In the past when folks have asked about problems getting on the plane with a 10hp I've given the reduce pitch advice but privately thought just get a bigger OB. We'll see.

Wonder which is faster white or black... hope it's the new 7.5" black one.

On a related topic... When I bought this 9.8 2-stroke one of the must have items in my tool kit was a spare prop nut and split pin. Came from SSI not Tohatsu and looked fine as I put it in the on-board kit box. Today thought as I was swapping the prop I'd just check the new nut was threaded correctly. Thread was fine but it needed a larger spanner than the OE nut which I didn't have in the kit. So had I not checked and needed that spare nut I'd not have carried a means to tighten it. Oh and the split pin is too long to fit in without bending. All faff you don't need leaning over the transom trying to replace a prop nut.

So yep there's a place for aftermarket stuff but it can catch you out.

Well I posted that 4 days ago as a somewhat ironic throwaway comment with zero intentions.

But you never know what you'll trip across at the coast. Always wanted to try one of these 15hp 2-stroke Johnsons. If they are asked about on here I always caution not to pay too much as they just don't have the popularity in the UK of the Yamaha/Mercury/Mariner 2-strokes. In the States though they seem to have an almost fanatical following amongst the portable OB users.

Be interesting to see how it goes compared to the down pitched Tohatsu 9.8.

It's light, rated 34kg but actually weighs 33.6kg. Only beaten in its class for weight by the 33kg Suzuki 15hp 2-stroke like the OYZ boys use.

Nothing wrong with older johnson/evinrude two strokes they were solid well made engines , far better than similar age Suzuki 2 strokes imho. It all started to go wrong when they started to go down the HPDI route instead of 4 stroke the first Fitch engines were a bit of a finacial disaster which lead to the demise of omc & it never got much better when bombardier continued with the Etec range & it eventually ended Evinrude forever. The Johnson/ bombardier badged 4 strokes were just Suzuki engines sold under licence. The 4 stroke Suzuki's are far better than the old two strokes suzuki made

Not a clone but a totally individual design to Johnson/Evinrude made in Wisconsin, USA. When they went to four stroke though they did re/badge some Suzuki engines in the portable sizes as Ken says.

Looks in great condition David. Was you looking specifically for a 15, or did you really just happen upon it?

It really was chance. After losing the responsiveness we'd been used when out last week we'd both had private thoughts the new prop might not be enough and heading back to 15hp might be the only option. Coincidentally over the past year my shoulder/neck problem caused in previous years by long transom wheel trundles has largely resolved and using the bow trolley has totally removed that stress. Lifting a 15hp 2-stroke has become a possibility again.

So I had a scout about looking for a semi-project because I like working on things and by chance this popped up within a reasonable distance. I want to get it ready for the hoped for outing next week so we'll try it and the new prop on the 9.8. I've ordered a small tach for the Johnson so we have some figures for both outboards and then we'll see which one will be our main OB.

Did they give you blue pills for that shoulder/neck? Was there a mix up?

Ahh the old Johnson... I've hesitated on the video... so far!

Anyway...

5. I've kind of run out of models in the 10/15hp range to try... only the Selva Naxos left.

But yep this will carry me through the closed season.

I had an commercial 15 Johnson I bought for £500 some years back not a fan of them tbh but it did the job well on a zodiac 310 solid.

Yes I had a look on search at old threads and found one way back when you made a similar comment.

My prior lack of enthusiasm has been rooted in the 70s models I never got on with when I was a teen. These days even latest models like this one always seem to fetch about 30% less than a similar condition Mercury etc.

But we will see. If it starts and drives the boat OK can't ask much more.
