Refurbished outboard? They shouldn't need refurbishing if a well maintained example. Is it a grey or black one? Does the refurb include it being repainted?

Well the Honwaves seem to get good reviews, and 3.2m sensible size.

£1200 seems steep for a used 9.8 2stroke depending on year. Like Fenlander says a well looked after one wouldn't need refurbishing or rebuilding less some paint or routine servicing.

Would look at yamaha/mercury/mariner 9.9/10hp also as options, newer the better.

Good motors indeed but 10kg heavier than the Tohatsu 9.8 which is a fair difference if portability is key. Mind you the Yamaha 9.9 2-stroke can easily be made into a 15HP... the Mercury/Mariners too but at far greater cost/complication.

Apologies, not refurbished, taken in as part ex i assume, then serviced and replaced carb jets etc.

It's from an outboard shop in Southampton. Ivan Burdfield Marine

Oh OK. Ivan can be unusual to deal with but he has some tidy motors albeit at firm prices so I'd be happy to buy from him.

Hi, I bought a Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke off a Ribnet member back in 2014. It is plated 2004 made in Japan, and I understand it had only been used in fresh water on Lake Bala until I bought it. I used it on a Zodiac 3.2 as a water taxi from my sailing boat whilst living onboard cruising Europe, the Med and Atlantic. We generally anchored off in bays because we were “shoestring” sailors and could not afford flashy marinas. Sadly the zodiac was stolen, but they did not get the Tohatsu as it was padlocked to the rail.

I can confirm that the Tohatsu 9.8 is a brilliant, easy to maintain, highly reliable motor which I could manhandle - with a deck lift - from the rail to the Zodiac with ease! Sadly, age has caught up with both me and my wife, and we are just in the process of selling our sailing boat and cruising life. The Tohatsu is sitting in my garage. If anybody is interested in it, pm me, and we can discuss. You can see it running and it comes with a fuel tank and a box misc spares. It will be collection only from Ripon, North Yorkshire after we have both had our COVID vaccinations next month.

I had to buy a Zodiac 2.9 Cadet v air deck as an emergency replacement dinghy in 2019 new. It too is in my garage. It too is available. Pm me. Peter R

Sunsport air deck 3.5m same quality as the Honwave. They have a 2year warranty with any Mercury Mariner dealer.

On the subject of getting a SIB on the roof for a short journey (for ease at the other end) I wondered whether anybody had used a roller?

In my mind, which can be a bit far fetched at times, I'm picturing leaning the sib up against the back of the car then placing the roller at the back end of the roof (SUV so pretty flat boot area) then leaning the boat onto the roller and pushing it over and onto the rails.

Hopefully this isn't the most stupid suggestion year to date...

What about a small trailer, seems to be alot less hassle than trying to hump it on to the car roof

Sea kayakers do that cross bar with a roller right at the back there are systems end and side loading but more expensive.

I looked at fitting a roller to the back of the truck roof rails. I couldn't find one to buy of the shelf wide enough to support the width of the tubes.

I misunderstood, you are looking at putting it on the roof inflated.

What we do is get some thick walled pipe to fit over the rack rail to be fair sink waste will do it you might have to change out now and then if you can't get it over the rail split the pipe one cut open up slide over and tape up.

Struggling to picture that one Jeff

I've designed a side lifting mechanism which I will use in conjunction with the scant cross members I already use on the roof of the truck. I'll post a few pictures when I've made it and the weather gets a little better

The pipe rolls around the rack bar giving a roller

I wondered if I could go hull side down?

It's literally a 3min drive. I can virtually see the sea from my house but not close enough to walk

The route is to a carpark, or I can also park right on the front. But I'm thinking the carpark provides a little more space for set up. Then over the road and down the beach.

The photos were taken today at high tide, and in incredibly windy conditions.

I'm also considering balloon tires.
