1991 Yamaha 20 HP SS 2 Stroke

Hi

I joined yesterday after seeing how much great info and experience is on this site.

I will be buying either a new Honwave T38 or an Excel Vanguard 365 shortly and wondering whether an older 1991 20HP Yamaha Short Shaft 2 stroke would suit these boats. I currently have an old Mariner (Yamaha) 55 EL on my speedboat and it has been bomb proof for 18 years!

Any advice gladly received ref either boat, engine or alternatives.

Hi Jasierock and welcome to the forum. Last year I bought a near 20yr old 2-stroke Yamaha 15hp. I'd always admired their visible high build quality and haven't been disappointed.

I don't know the older range you mention but there's a guy on here who does know them well. I remember him commenting certain older models were better than the later ones.

Perhaps he'll notice this and post some thoughts.

The twin carb, autolube 20D/25N are not the nicest engine. The 20hp “Origin” model (single carb, premix) is a much longer lived engine and far preferable. Both were sold alongside each other in 1990s.

Thanks for the heads up Fenlander/Phantom. It is the 20D so I will swerve it and look for something a bit newer.
