Nigel I have spoken with Steve, he's only 5 mins from me so have arranged a quick viewing for tomorrow morning for you - will keep you updated. I suspect I've bought from him in the past as if its who I think it is he dabbles in them a bit, as a hobby more than anything.

If its any good I might even buy it myself - only kidding

Sounds odd within an hour of knowing somebody in the trade was to view it for a buyer, still happy to go view the Rib if need be. Will call him in the morning and go from there

Getting the engine on its own will be harder & more expensive (usually) than a package. Considering the distance I'd look for another....they usually come up pretty often.

It does annoy me that poeple use ebay to advetise stuff in this way - then avoid any responsibity via ebay and no fees payable as the engine is sold 'privately'....

I disagree. This auction was always just for the Rib, with the motor being advised as being sold separate. In this case Nigel was the one looking to secure it as a package, rather than chance it with an auction bid so it's not really the seller who has sold it from under him.

We put a bit on eBay but very rarely does it run through. Most times we could and in all probability make a lot more money but the risk of time wasters, non paying bidders etc is so high it's far better to use eBay for what it is, a platform to advertise. When our deal figure is offered we always take it and remove from sale. Obviously if the auction is in its last 12 hours we are obliged to let it run and honour the selling price. Just wish the buyers would do the same!!!

I know we will get the usual "why not use a buy it now then" comments but lets be honest, firstly they don't stop idiots buying when drunk and not paying, costing us a lot in fees. Secondly they do not get the same interest as an auction. It's quite bizarre how people will see a buy it now and just watch it but see an auction and submit an offer, thinking they are getting it from under the noses of everybody else! Many a times we have listed a buy it now and it go unsold, put it on auction and it goes past the previous weeks buy it now price. People love a bit of excitement...

What sort of money will a 50 hp cost me just wondering as I'm on a tight budget if the boats good and I can get it for about 700 it might pay to get them separate as I've looked at quite a few ribs and they have wanted loads doing to them and I would have had no money left.
Thanks
Nigel

Peter is your man for a used engine and a quide to price.

I do see his point on selling etc, but if you want to sell a package surely you 'should' advertise the package, and not just the boat ? If you advertise the boat (by auction or classifed add) with a side note of 'oh and I'm selling the engine' means the actual price you pay fees on is much lower than if you advetised the package for maybe twice/three times as much ?

How can it be fair to the guys selling the package at a package price paying fees on that price ?

I 100% agree that ebay is now full on non paying muppets...but thats a whole website on its own.

Thats my point he didn't want to sell the package, for whatever reason, perhaps he expected more by splitting it. A bidder wanted it as a package so he has done a deal on it, in principle at least. Turns out (if we believe what he's put) that somebody else has beat him to trying to secure it early, or in other words beat him to trying to "cheat the system" as you say (albeit in your own words). It happens!

I bet you've enquired to end early on auction items before ? How's that any different ? How's that fair on other bidders looking to win the auction. Swings and roundabouts I tell you! End of the day it's a platform to sell the item. I know I've done it.

I get your points though. Ideal world best bid wins. If that best bid was guaranteed to pay I'd never end early. Fact is they don't!

Bird in the hand n all that

Oddly..I haven't...maybe I just have decent moral values...

If its an auction for a boat..its for the boat, if its for the engine..its for the engine.

If its a fixed price..same thing applies. I just don't get the morals for a boat auction with an engine on the side....

Agree to disagree? ;-)

You win then there's nothing moral about it though. They've still put it on auction to sell, which is the result of a deal to end early. What wouldn't be right is using the auction to inflate the deal price.

Anyway looks like Nigel may be looking for a package so I may not be viewing it now

Guess we will never know

Was instructed not to view after the motor sold separate. So its back to the chance you take on bidding blind
