But your "Hearts & Minds" campaign should win them over!

I operate in a relatively remote area where fishing is important in the community. I find it best to work with the locals, not against them. Incomers who comment (seen as complaining) about access, parking, litter, other water users, rogue potting, poaching, pollution, etc., will soon discover that the fruits of their civic mindedness are bitter indeed. If the locals are putting up with a "problem", best the incomer do the same - IMO.
What is Rogue potting is there official and unofficial

Lobster pots!!!

These boys have been on the seas in their local areas for generations in most cases.... I've made friends with my local lads (who's pots are both dangerous and annoy the shit outta me) but about once a week I buy 3 lobsters and 15 or 20 crab claws from them for €15....

They'll be there long after you've given up your hobby. The pots are in the same place all the time, learn where and go elsewhere on your very capable boat. Turn it to your advantage. Great off the barbe with fresh lime..... [emoji41]

I have always found it interesting that just because something has happened for a long time and even if perhaps it is an issue people think it is OK just because it has been there a while. Slavery for example existed for quite a while and still does so does that mean we should just accept it ?

yes you should have a licence to fish for lobsters and crabs. I have one it only covers you for your stretch of coastline too .they give you tags to attach to your pots so they can be identified as yours .(I have had the licence for a few years now but never actually got around to getting any pots lol)

Just one that came to mind but there are of course many more. Perhaps

Smoking in public places
Fox Hunting
Same sex marriage
The EU and Brexit
Red Diesel in boats
Sail v power - Of course sail was there for ages first
etc

Many people in the world would say we should not be eating lobsters or indeed any animal.......... Things change

What do you think of my main point ?

Things certainly change, sometimes not for the better. I wouldn't miss the tricky pots, but I'd certainly miss my lobster! The OP was asking about poorly placed pots in Northern Ireland and I think the replies from those with relevant experience are fairly much in agreement.

There is a "white settler" in my homeport who spends his days railing against the locals and their useless government who don't have a clue how to run a country properly like he did when he was "at home". He's a fairly miserable object, sitting on his @rse doing nothing productive, picking fights with people who'd much rather he was elsewhere. He's right about a lot of what he says but he's wasting his life. The sea may be "for everyone" but never think the locals don't control it and the vital access to it!

I think that you are at risk of diverting the discussion into banned topics!

FYI, licenses and tags are NOT required in every area of the UK (nor even England as far as I know). There will still be rules on number of pots and size of catch depending on local supply/demand.

I'm not sure what your sail v power argument was - do you not give way to sailing boats? The rest of your points seem to have been effected by legislation, consultation and some sort of democratic debate. Vigilantism is a totally different prospect.

Well if he keeps this ever expanding potting line thing going we will need a crane to get on the water!
As some have said, it's only a hassle for the first and last few minutes of our trips.

We've had a nice few lobsters and decent crabs this year out of our pots . Also good sized Mackerel and Pollock this year too on Kintyre. We only keep what we eat. There's always a few rogue pots with milk cartons here but we try to give them a wide berth.
They are a bugger to spot when the seas rough.
