Hull paint

I bought the rib at the end of the last season, the previous owner had obviously scored the hull probably getting onto the trailer. Anyway the hull has been anti fouled, I don’t need an anti-fouled hull because I always have the boat on my driveway when it’s not being used and it’s washed down. I would prefer to strip the anti-foul off but I can foresee grief.
I would prefer to repaint with light grey but I don’t need anti-foul. Any ideas for a suitable paint to paint over the existing paint and won’t peel off please?

I think I would just paint it with light grey anti-foul. I know you don't need it, but it's probably the easiest solution (pardon the pun).

Yes, I think you’re right, will probably be the easiest option. Ta John

Painting it will tidy it up but if you dont like antifoul, you'll still not like new antifoul & adding another coat will only make it harder when you do decide to remove it. My current boat was antifouled when I got it & eventually Ill get round to cleaning it off but in the meantime ive left it & occasionally jet wash the hull & the coating is getting thinner every time, making the task easier when I do get around to it. Antifoul is soft so marks easily so a new coat will soon become scruffy. The best option for a boat bottom is gelcoat, obviously not the easy option but you don't need to remove it all in one go.

I think you’re right I’m sat on East Head Chichester looking at the boat bobbing around and it looks great. Can’t see the hull only when it’s on my driveway, perhaps I won’t bother.

When I first got my boat it had anti-foul on it, and getting it on and off carpeted bunks took full throttle. So while fixing it up we already had the outboard off and center console removed, so we flipped it over, sanded and re-gel coated all exposed surfaces of the boat. Changed the wood for the trailer bunks and put HDPE over the top, and now the trailer bunks can be completely out of the water for launch and recovery.

To remove the anti-foul you will need to sand, that means on the trailer/stands overhead sanding which is not fun, especially without dust collection. Then shooting paint overhead. Just know it is a lot of work.

I've had good results washing antifoul off with cellulose thinners soaked onto a rag doing a patch at a time. Ive found the prep prior to applying antifoul is usually fairly poor so any sanding marks polished out with 600 or 800 grit & g3 on a rotary polisher got the hulls back to a good finish
