Proud New SIB Owner

I have today become the proud owner of a nice new SIB.

After much deliberation I have chosen the Yamaha Yam 280Sti with a 4HP 4 Stroke Outboard. This model has the air mat flor, which makes for a much easier time puting it away and stowing it. It weighs a mere 31Kg with oars, pump etc. The engine is only a little over 20Kg.

This will give me the opportunity to keep it in the boot and launch whenever I get the opportunity for a litle time on the water, or take it with me In Topaz when we go down to the channel Islands etc where we need to anchor off.

It also gives me the chance to be part of the SIB Fleet for those little adventures that may come along.

Now there's a challenge if ever I heard one. I think the SIB lot should all get together and prove him wrong! A diesel powered SIB, should be good for a laugh.

Just get one of the smaller Diesel Outboards, and the New Quicksilver Airdeck with the drop cones on it to take the extra weight - bingo

(Knowing Mike though he would till want to carry a spare!)

Yanmar make a 27 & 36 HP diesel OB its alan B'std heavy and not exactly the quietest power unit in the world.
They are all hand assembled hence the high costs. There's even a higher power military only model (which they don't own up too!)
only an option if your not allowed petrol!

So how big is a 36hp diesel OB, sounds like it could be a monster(size and weight) you say they're expensive!, how expensive, I don't want one, I'm just interested, wonder whether they will ever produce a tdi OB or something with a better power to weight

Its been a while since I had the misspleasure of playing with them.
hope this pictue of a dual on a 6.5m zodiac inf. It doesn't make the plane!
as for price sorry can't help, never bought one, rigged it and supplied and fitted all electrical stuff etc.

I've seen the 36hp OB and it ways a ton and looks like a 150 petrol engine.

On my local canal there is a small narrowboat (around 20 foot) that is driven by an 8HP Diesel Outboad. Unfortunatley I cant recall the makers name, and it is out in winter storage at the moment. All I know is that it is quite an old one - around 10 years old I think.

Will try to find out more.

(By the way I understand it is stll VERY heavy compared to petrol models)

Ruggerini make a 15 & 20 HP air cooled single cylinder outboard.
We use the 15 Hp and it weighs in @ 80 KGs which is quite heavy but it does push Spirit along at 5 knots fully laden (7 tonnes)
Of course, the weight is only reletive to the petrol that you would have to have on board a deisel RIB.

Say average 20 hp petrol outboard 25kgs
Petrol to get you home (Mid channel 35 miles) 60 litres
Aka, Nothing in it and no question unless you go in pairs.Alan P

Coventry still do a 25hp, appears every year at fishing (commercial) exhibitions. Lasted for at least 20 years so got a good market (I've only seen it in use on fish farms, but we may be buying one for the RIB tender on our new R/V - buying some diesel o/b definately).
