WHO SAID THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I think Ford bought them after BMW realised that they'd messed up by not checking that 'Rover Group' didn't include LR. However, look at Maverick, Freelander or WHAT.

BTW, BMW X3 - what were they thinking?

Rogue,

(Don't believe everything you read)

I am almost 99.9% sure that BMW never got hold of LR. They were really p*ssed that Rover group didn't include the marque - which is why it took them yonks to get the X5 out.

Either way - our Disco is GREAT - even if it does go to the garage too often (but hey, they do wash it!! )

Rr

I believe BMW developed the new Rangie. And yes the TD6 diesel engine is the same as the BMW 3.0d engine as found in the 330d, 530d, 730d and X5.
However, I think the Rangies verion is in a lower state of tune - 184bhp I think whereas the Beemers now have over 200 out of the same engine.

Lr...

NO - BMW were V pissed off that LR wasn't part of the Rover Marque. LR exist as a seperate entity (not entirely sure of ownership, suspect Ford). As for the engine, the petrol V8 is LR. As for the TD5, I would guess thats the same?!?

I thought the Rover V8 was originally a Buick V8 that they brought under licence for the first Rangerovers circa 1970.... back to America again...

As for the TD5, I think that is compelety British and developed from the old Rover 2.5 indirect motor that was fitted to the early Sherpa's....

No idea about the V8, only know that the 'Rover V8' is a "must" in the kit car community (I've never built one).

Err yes, I think you'll find not only did BMW own LR, they also developed the 5 cylinder TD5 engine (Not the sherpa engine!) They also took all the best QA engineers from LR with them when they went....
and the V8 was in use before the Rangie.. P5/P6 anyone...

And the old Sherpa engines were made by Beans Engineering (who also made Reliant Robin engines).

MY ars*... Quality engineers?!?!?!?

Our Disco has been back a few times. I (Joe public, although an engineer) have fixed a good chunk of the problems myself.

That's the whole point! LR treated their QA guys badly, so BM just took 'em away.. the one I'm thinking of in particular now works down Chichester way on another "quality" car, were at least they know his value...Same guy who married JC's daughter.. funny old world in't it?

Sorry..

it was the sherpa LT77 gearbox that they used....

Didn't then rehash it and call it the R380... and then all the bearings fall apart
around about the same time as the TD5 oil pumps became a problem... or was that the steering box upper and lower oil seals...no sorry that was the front hub bearings after all the oil had run out through the seals and before LR suggested you filled them up with grease?????

or was it the head gasket..... can't remember...... oh no it could of been the leaking sunroof or even the spare whell mounting bracket....

An emotive (automotive subject)

(Edited as I was inadvertently appearing to be condescending!)
Some interesting facts (or not as the case may be)

1) BMW owned Land Rover as part of Rover Group.
2) BMW famously sold Rover Group to the Phoenix Consortium for a tenner and Land Rover to Ford for considerably more. Land Rover was (still is I think) part of Ford's Premier Automotive Group along with Jag, Aston Martin and occasionally Volvo.
3)BMW retained the Cowley factory to build mini, the new (at that time) engine plant at Hams Hall and for some bizarre reason Swindon Pressing Plant.
4) Land Rover in 2000 consisted of people who were in the BMW organisation, some who transferred from Rover Cars and some people who came from Ford. I was that soldier....
5) Land Rover in 2004 has lots of Jag people plus original LR people and some Ford people.
6) The new Rangie (L30) was engineered by BMW and BMW engineers were working on the project right up to the start of production a.k.a job1. BMW's way of engineering a new car is one of continous change/improvement of parts right upto and through Job 1. This was an anathema to Ford and Rover personnel where design is frozen sometime before Job 1 unless its an urgent safety reqt. Which was is best? Good question. You tell me who builds better cars but also tell me who builds volume cars well. (cos it aint BMW)
7) The investment in Solihull for L30 was staggering. The engineering that went into that vehicle was also staggering.
8) LR trivia from the inside. Did you know that in 2000 Land Rover had 1538 different types of fastener used in its vehicle range. BMW used an additional 500 in L30. Ford used less across its whole vehicle range in Europe. Not that interesting really
9) Solihull is an old old factory. The workforce (IMVHO) has not embraced change and truly believes that they can take on Ford and win. ("We've seen off the bleedin' Germans & we'll do for the Yanks next.") Ford is a very different company in 04 than in 2000. They will move production overseas if Solihull doesn't work. New Disco is being built in Halewood.
10) I love and hate LR's. Used to have a SIII for offroading & have done both RTV and CCV trials. They have the image. TD5 sounds great. I had two Disco's (company cars) in 2000/1 and for a £30k car I thought they were the worst ergonomics and build quality I'd seen. & I came from Ford who in the early to mid 90's were pretty bad themselves. I wouldn't spend my hard earned on anything else than a new Rangie. And I can't afford one of them
11) New Disco I am sure will be good motor. Range stormer (sporty Rangie) probably also. I understand from current contacts in LR that Defender replacement has been indefinately postponned. Defenders are hand built but not in a good way like Aston's!
