Manual gas assist lift

I have an ex Rnli mariner 40hp outboard 2006 with a manual gas assist lift. The lift is now incredibly stiff to raise and lower. I understand these are sealed units and cannot be repaired and also finding a NOS one is almost impossible. Has anyone else had experience of this and if so what are my options. I am probably going to look to sell the boat at the end of the season but, could do with it being a bit more functional than it is now without spending fortunes
