Looking forward to this, they haven't made huge strides for a good few years now so I was anticipating this.

It's gonna be a RAVE!

I quizzed my local Evinrude dealer and the only thing he would say is that's it could be a Hybrid outboard and only available in the larger (e.g.150 HP and above)outboards.
He also said there would be one on display at the Melbourne Boat show which is on in about 2 weeks.

I can't personally see it being a hybrid as that would remove one of the etec's key selling points - weight. Plus, there's no gap in the power where torque fill is needed!

- 2 Stroke
- Bulit in Steering
- Very low oil consumption through recirculation of oil.
- Oil reservoir will be under the cowling

I cant see how they can improve much more, other than this its already a good motor !

I guess I am going to sound stupid now, but what's the difference between a standard and a HO? Other than id rather have a HO than a standard...

Looking at the 150 and 150 HO?

With a 20" Shaft they both weigh 190kg, both go upto 5850RPM..

Is the HO at the higher end of the 10% power variance allowed, so a 150 could have 143hp but a HO could be 159?

Essentially yes. It's for the American bass boat tournament market where those 9hp make a big difference, and Mercury have XS and Yamaha Vmax. For a deep v rib there isn't much point IMHO, however the arguement is different between the 200 and the 200HO because there is a big difference in power and torque as one is 2.6L and the other 3.3L. Some of the HOs also have different gearboxes and gear ratios better suited for the bass boat type hulls although this is no longer the case for the 250HO.

It all depends on the boat really, in my opinion the best engine Evinrude makes is the 200. It is so light and so powerful it's awesome. However going up 30kg on a heavier boat may make sense as the torque difference is large.

Ahhh! OK, It just seemed strange when I looked at the 150 as everything seemed identical...

Looking at the others it as you said, like the new 90HO seems to be a de-tuned 115. Although you have the weight I like the idea that its under less stress.

Doesn't the HO have a low water pick-up?

The 200 2.6 litre is not great on the power side, the 150 and 175 are excellent however the 200 gains top end power at the expense of low end grunt. Hence the 3.3 litre version...

The 250HO, 225HO and I think the 200HO used to have a different type of gearcase to the regular models which did have lower water pickups allowing the engines to be run higher. The 250HO doesn't have this type of gearbox anymore so there is no difference to the 300 however I'm not sure about the others. I think the 225HO still uses the L2 gearbox but I'm not exactly sure.

Obviously the lower water pickups make a much bigger difference to the bass boats with their hydraulic jacks, for us the beefier gearbox is much preferable.
