I have been lucky so far!

Oooh, santa came and bought me a new radio! ICOM M423G - will fit that soon then need to get out on the water!

Am applying for the licence - is it the Ship Radio I need and is there an online course etc etc?

Cheers!

A very nice present indeed, Santa has good taste!

You should get a Ship's Radio Licence for your vessel/equipment - free from the Ofcom website. You just fill in your details and your vessel/equipment, and can print out/save the pdf licence.

In order to transmit on the radio (except in an emergency, or when under supervision of a VHF SRC holder), you need to complete your RYA VHF SRC course/exam if you don't already have your VHF SRC qualification. The RYA do offer an online theory training course for that, but you would still have to go to a training centre to do the practical side and complete the exam.

Hi All

So have just bought a Metz aerial so am ready to fit the radio etc. Is it OK to mount this to the side of the console?

I have bought the side mount kit from Slaty John.

Or should I add a pole and fix to the transom (I have an easy cbale route to get it there from the console?

Pics of all your aerial installs would be useful!!

Thanks in advance!!

Cheers?

You want the aerial as high as possible. On the side of the console is not ideal. I have mine on what is actually a stainless broom handle (available in any chandlers) on the back of a seat rest which puts it above head height so there are no obstructions and I'm not putting 25 watts right into the crew's brain.

Or grab yourself a transom mounted pole. Height makes a massive difference to range so really get it as high as you can

Why not get a telescopic pole increase height when needed

I would say having an aerial mounted by the console would result in it being used as a grab handle which it probably wouldn't like.

As high as possible as others have said. The only time I've found this to be an issue is whilst trying to extricate yourself from a raft (possibly rack) of RIB's and you are attempting to pass underneath the shore lines of the boat moored outside you.

going for 2m pole on transom - any higher would look a bit odd?

2m carbon fibre pole on folding mount so it can be laid down (and clipped to side of jockey seat) for transporting.

Will post pics when done!

Also ordered back2you boat wired tracker! (seen lots of debates on here about various trackers so not looking for feedback - seems to be a hot topic!!)

Cheers

UPDATE!

Finding the time to work on this project is proving too difficult. Soooooo....

I am having all the work done for me. The boat gets delivered on the 21st August to the workshop and the work will all be done in 2 - 3 weeks.

Once the work is done I will post pictures (they will take some pics at various stages through the job as well) and then I will tell you all who is doing it, and hopefully give them a glowing review!

I cannot wait to get my hands on the finished boat and will be taking it for a spin on the day of collection! CANNOT WAIT!!!

Lazy option I know but if I don't get someone else to do it, it may never happen!

Cheers all!!
