Im looking out on donegal bay. There a good blow on and lots of white horses. Smaller ribs will be getting a rough wet ride.

Bit late to the party here so sorry but great to hear your story Andy and thank god your here to tell it!

In these situations it's all to easy to criticise someone for their mistakes but with the benefit of hindsight I can't honestly see what else you could have done to have had a better outcome other than not going in in the first place!

You were prepared with all the right kit, stayed calm with rational logical thought and did everything possible to help the people coming to save you!

You are indeed one lucky bugger but but you can make your luck sometimes and you sure did this time. Perfect planning prevents piss poor performance and your planning has without doubt saved this from being a much more unpleasant story!

Good luck with the rest of the trip!

Mustrib. Can i ask a question. Having not crossed with the others, were you just reliant on the VHF and PLB should something happen? ie, if you had gone over and been out cold, or lost the PLB too (bloody unlucky) was there anyone who was expecting your arrival in paddyland?

Thinking on. If someone was then looking for you, is it the idea that they can find you on AIS? I assume no PLBs can be activated remotely.

PS I'd have been proper worried once floating at water level that far from anywhere. Glad you are safe.

I think as an inexperienced idiot, after an hour I'd have thought sod it I'm alone and taken the Gecko off, LJ off and tried to swim to the boat.... most likely wrongly based on experienced peoples' comments on here.

i would presume he left a TR with whatever CG look after the area, milford haven i guess.
even still, that alone isnt cause to search for someone, often people forget to close their TR, go somewhere else, or turn round and go home....

It would generally take a phone call from someone enquiring where the vsl is before anyone would investigate...

AFAIK, all safely landed in Killybegs. A lovely day up to Tory and then turned fairly sour - but that's ribbing, innit?

Highlight for my day was helming off Inishtrahull and seeing a lighting strike on the water ahead of us, pretty much on our course

Way too tired to post pics now - off to the scratcher...
