well the gurnard introduced me to wild camping a couple of years back a whole new experience in a small boat not for the faint hearted i know but one of the most enjoyable experiences i've had, something i would never have done in my RIB letting it dry out overnight on that pristeen hull but everyone's right there isn't one boat that will do it all

Hi again BP .. I have a 4.3m SIB and a 2.75m RIB and find I use the smaller boat more than the bigger boat. I have visited most the places on the West of Scotland that large RIBs visit so size has not stopped me. Although I have not been to St Kilda ..as its not been on my wish list..my brother Douglas has been several times.. in a kayak.

I had hope to get the “Magic of Mull” box set made this week when I came home for a dentist appointment. Now that is sorted..Im heading back to sea again so it will be done when I eventually get storm bound.

I wish you all a great boating season ...and remember IMO ..size does not matter.. its what you do with it that matters.

In my view the Honwave T38 is the best SIB for the money

Get a couple of itiwit electric pumps and it is inflated in no time

It is a very capable boat

Not withstanding the Honwave being the "Best"..I agree....B.P.....WITH of course the right experienced Helm
The smaller the Boat the tighter the margins are for complacency and error.

I did many many miles/hours in my old 20hp Zodiac SIB..(in most conditions)and IMO time on the Sea spent in smaller craft is a great grounding and certainly makes you a better Navigator/All round Sea Fairer!
Things like tidal flow..weather conditions...helming...loading..chart reading..timings ect are ALL much more pertinent than in largish big Engined.. Fast..Deep V'd RIB's ...where you can often get in and out of the worst of conditions/situations presented quickly and safely.

Looking forward to the Full Mull Vid!!!...Gurnard Scores again!!

Thanks Maximus ..and I absolutely agree ..there is considerable seamanship skills that need to be learned .. not from forums ... but from real life experience.. before anyone can safely take any size boat to sea.

What myself or my brother do in small boats may look easy on video or photos..but do be aware it is the accumulation of a life time of experience ..which we regularly share with each other. We have a total of 130 years experience of the West of Scotland between us.

So please ... if you are a beginner ..dont try to emulate many of the adventures I post or you may end up in deep waters . Dont take risks with sea conditions... it will win the battle!!!

The kayaks paddled all around St Kilda Sea stacks ..but has a support boat in attendance at all times.

I will go back into my cave now until the Magic of Mull video is ready.

I think it is fairly simple... you just need a suitable boat for the task. For example, the cargo ships I worked on were great at transporting thousands of tons of cargo around the world but not suitable for tanker towing or as a dive boat. The big RIBs we used in the North Sea/ Atlantic were good for crew transfers, SAR etc but would not be ideal for working a rocky shoreline or shallow water. The same logic applies to leisure craft... just buy a boat suitable for what you like to do. Working creels? Avoid a SIB. Beach/ bay hopping... SIB is ideal. Diving in deeper water with longer runs... RIB.

As said, just do your research and use a suitable boat.

I think this translates as:

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper!...... I fart in your general direction! . Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

or the bigger ones are less fun and the smaller ones less comfortable.

The ultimate size is normally a foot bigger than the one your in at the time.Unless of course you are stuck firmly sideways between two fingers in a marina when you wish it was a foot shorter.

I've been in 100 meter plus boats and wished they were bigger so I dont think you can get too big
If you have the budget!
That said I think you get more smiles per pound from a little boat. Bigger doesn't always equal more fun although probably does allow you to go out in less favourable conditions
If you want to!

sometimes unless your close in you won't see them especially arches & caves one of the reasons i went back to SIBS when you have tens of thousands invested in a RIB it makes you reluctant to venture too close.

It would be a right fecking nuisance to unbeach a big rib from some island you decided to have a nose around on for the craic. If I had a rib any bigger than the one I have I would probably have become a castaway with a massive beard by now

Big boat to get you there in comfort then use a little boat to go exploring with best of both worlds saves on hotel stays too
Although fuel for big boat probably eliminates any saving
