I am in the very fortunate position of having a biggish boat 8m diesel Scorpion and a little boat 4.7m Searider I probably use the little Rib 80% of the time due to ease of launching and "contact" with the sea,we regularly do 150 mile plus trips After saying that it is great to get back into the Scorpion and feel the raw power and sea keeping abilities of this fantastic boat. Perhaps an option might be to carry an inflatable paddle board for more intimate exploration

I’m in the same position, I have a 8.1m ceasar rib powered by twin Honda 225’s and a ribeye 650s with a Yamaha 150. In both boats we usually take two inflatable sup boards but there is also a small 2.5m sib and a 2.5hp outboard for getting ashore

Why do you say excellent? Seemingly universally hated they were there for a purpose and all things equal, without them the boat will plane differently. How much remains to be seen, I can't see any positives of them not being there (launching wheel design aside).

They were a pain for launch wheels and transducer mounts.

What was their purpose I wonder? I've had alloy floor Honwave, Zodiac wooden floor, Avon wooden floor, 4x Zodiac air floor and 2x Bombard air floor. All would plane fine and none had or needed those tabs.

I wouldn't say it's a question of needing tabs, just that the boat (any boat) will in theory plane at a lower speed and with less horsepower if they are there. They produce stern lift.

They increase the hull length and wetted area around the engine leg which is especially where it's needed most because of that weight. They might also have an anti-splash or anti-ventilation effect and produce slightly better wake? I'm not a hull designer. Someone decided they were of benefit and after prototype trials decided to include them in the original design, or save money and bow to convention as is the case now . Not all design changes benefit the end user.

Negligible to zero value on such a lightweight boat, causing more pain than gain. As Mr F points out, a real arse in the transom wheel and transducer departments.

Worth noting the transom is not the back of a sib. There are two bleedin great sponsons extending rearwards, providing both lift on the plane and buoyancy when not.

Also the T38 can, and is, more prone to ventilation issues than many sibs even with the floor extensions.

Reckon getting rid of those pesky little tabs will prove a good move.

Are you sure?
Small (2.7m) lightweight boats are harder to plane than a longer (3.6m) stablemate because they would be carrying the same weight/fat person and sit lower in the water. The angle of attack to get over the hump is steeper because of the shorter hull. Every inch helps!

They probably are a manufacturing pain as well. Like I say, some designer and bean counter got together and decided what features to include/exclude and they decided to include them originally. Fact.

Maybe the new design has additional rear buoyancy? Originally they were not added to compensate for some design flaw, they were part of it.

Fully understand that, with the same motor and load, a longer sib will plane earlier and have more speed than a shorter one.

Just feel the negligible on water benefit of the extended floor tabs are far outweighed by the problems they create.
