A Question for the Yanmar Diesel Folks....

I'm considering buying a second boat which is powered by a Yanmar 6lp dte 265hp turbo diesel via a bravo one x drive. In a heavy sea, how do you deal with that no mans' land climbing onto the plane and needing the turbo to spin up to give sufficient power? Does this engine spin up its turbo early or are you stuck at low speed and just plod along between the waves?

Also, do any of you use the Bravo One X drive, any issues with it, reliability or usage?

I've done a couple of days with it's 6LP 315hp sister. The turbo lag was woeful. And I mean, woeful. It ruled the engine out for me.

Okidoke, thanks for that. Can you recall whether the boat used a Bravo 1 or a Bravo 3, (single prop or dual prop)?

It had a Yanmar ZT350 leg with yanmar duos. I remember it well because we stripped the clutch pack half way up Jura :-)

I've got a hard boat with 2 315s in and turbo lag is a bit of a problem, mines on bravo 3s I've also got a delta with a 240hp yamaha which is the same 12v engine you have. With the yamaha version of the same block it's much more eager than the yanmar version
Often the tachos over read and you think your correctly propped but actually your over propped and the engine is slightly overloaded maybe a reduction in pitch might help.
The problem with b11 and b111 is you get very little slip so the turbo can't spool up they get to 2000rpm or just over and they come onto boost all of a sudden
A b1 might be better as you'll get more slip and allow the turbo to spool up
All the bravo range use the same top end gears so in theory they should be all the same for reliability but it does seem the b1 is the least troublesome probably due to the reduced load of the smaller prop followed by the b11 with the b111 being the most fragile ,I'd imagine due to the extra lower gearset creating more heat the oil seems to degrade quicker

It is a LANDcruiser engine guys....
The new Yanmar 4cyl that shall shortly be introduced is perfect though!!!

The 8cyl Landcruiser engine they currently marinize is no slouch either....

I'd save comments like that for after its been in service a year or two [emoji6]
The 6by bmw based engine they introduced was a disaster and never found popularity

the 6lp has been a good engine for a lot of years and they were still available from barrus late last year but no idea for how long. Parts should be available for quite a time to come, I think there supposed to keep parts available for 10 years after production stops
the good thing is no electronics so pretty easy to keep running without dealer support
A good option in a rib apart from the turbo lag but a reduction in prop pitch helps but with the down side of a slight loss in top speed
