Yanmar or Volvo

out of the 300hp variety of these engines which do you think is best.

The Volvo's seem to have rediculouse spares prices but a good engine.

The Yanmar good engine but not quite as good at pick up as the Volvo.

At present I use outboards, but on a team building day earlier in the year, one of the other ribs was a Yanmar Outdrive. The skipper had volvo's and mercruiser's in the past and swore by the Yanmar saying it was a reliable and trustworthy motor.
I have had Volvo's but only in the smaller 150hp/170hp not the 300hp, but never had any problems with them.

Yanmar

Yanmar without a doubt, Spoken to lots of marine mechanics who all swear by them and i've used them for about 5 years and they have been great, no problems at all.

'Ere we go again..........

Yanmar 300 is good engine imho and deservedly popular on big RIBs. Problem can be drive systems - search for the many posts on the subject of B3 or 3x legs & Yanmars vs B2 & B1. Some report many failures of B3(x) legs whilst others have had no problems.

Volvo expensive but better drive (duoprop). Seem to recall thats what Crazyhorse has specced for his super duper Ali RIB so perhaps worth asking for his opinion. (Cos it will be well researched!)

Depends totaly on what you want from the boat! if it's outright performance, you only have one choice- Yanmar.

9 mtr sport rib(mpl), kad 300= 57mph

9 mtr sport rib (mpl), 300 yanmar/B1= 64mph!

although the volvo boat was a little heavier, big diference none the less.

hmmm.......I thought this would be the outcome and its what i wanted to hear. After researching it myself the Yanmar with Bravo 1 seems the best option.

ta for the help

Uhoh! Not necessarily. I have a Yanmar 300 and Barrus made a point of specifying the Bravo 2 leg. Have had this running for just 75 hours now and the performance of my heavy 9m cabin RIB is better than I - and everyone else it seems - expected. Coupled with a 17.75 x 21 inch prop it has plenty of power for a 6+ ton RIB. With 500 litres of fuel and 5 adults the top speed of 34 knots was unaffected by the load.

Bravo 2X...just a thought.
Cheers

oh no...........more decisions.

I am probably going to order an 8.5 or 9 meter Ribtec (the wide hull) so that is qite interesting. I expect without as much weight as yours it should be a little quicker. what do you think mike.

So why the 2 instead of the 1

Without being a diesel expert I've read that nothing beats volvo in acceleration and planning time.

Are you sure about that weight mike? it seems a lot to me for a single engined rib, albeit a cabin rib, my 28 footer(8.5M) cabin boat with twin diesels/bravos only weighs in at just over 3! that's a bloody big diference in the boat only weight. (if my 8.5M hard boat had a tube it would probably measure closer to 9, like yours!)

The Bravo 2X leg is the commercially robust one as opposed to the sportier Bravo 1X and 3X. Barrus spec'd it, I reckon, cos they has so much trouble from the 3X and my RIBtec hull is not a high perormance hull. Just good solid sea going stuff like Alan Priddy's SOC with, as he put it, all the aerodynamics of a brick.

The Mercury brochure describes the Bravo 2X as being for big boats and then "for getting on the plane quicker then facilitating lower engine speeds for superior fuel economy".

The Bravo 1X is describes as being "designed to excel under the high stress requirements of performance boats. Heavy duty yet hydrodynamic". Whatever that means.

If I were you I would talk to Joe Poulter. the EP Barrus slaes engineer. You can telephone him on 07711 467734. Joe's a wizard and will give you the right advice.

Well, it's like this...

Jon Fuller has a boat without tubes, but wishes it was a RIB, and he can't keep away from RIBnet, even though he runs a similar forum (albeit with only seven registered members) which he secretly wishes was a RIB forum, so he has a RIB section...

That's the way it is, isn't it Jon?

ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz here again

we are now at the same --- many time conversation about, what engine.......
Mike G if your boat weighs 6 + ton then something is wrong,,, 500 L of fuel = 500KG is the whole boat weight then with engine 5.5 ton,, if so someone must have added some lead somewhere?
I know someone with a 11m and that is 4 T (ish) and has 2 inboards??

Anyway back to the original - i have a KAD 44 and 32 - am just about to have fitted to the next 9.5 the KAD 300 - would not think twice about it -- the reliability and no hassle with the volvos is great -combined now over 2,500 hours commercially, this speaks for itself ---- dump the yanmar and its foreign leg --- go for a combined package --- unless you are wearing blinkers...

Pete. I'm working from spec. And yes there is ballast. the original owner added resin and lead up front because he would not accept the builder's recommendation to correct post -aunch trim by adding a second forward tank to the aft one. I just can't be bothered to try and grind it all out.

And don't forget it is has a big cabin. The two KAB seats each needed two people to carry them when I was rearranging the furniture. Still, the soft ride is good for my aged spine.

Well Pepper my old pal, I don't know what you fellas in reading are smoking these days, but I'll bet it's not legal!

As for wanting to own a rib, I can't begin to think why I would want such a thing, and with respect to my frequent visits to "fibnet" they are really for pure entertainment! it should be re-named the fiction forum!
