Did I just see a a banner on a page just now ???

I taught you said you would never ever stick em on the site- over your dead body or something like that ya said .

I said there would never be pop-up ads, and there aren't.

I also said that I am not currently offering banner ads, and I'm not.

As a trial I am running some Google Adsense adverts to see whether it's worthwhile. I've been generally impressed with the relevance of adverts so far, and I don't think that they are too intrusive.

What do you reckon though? Interesting ads? Pain in the butt? Like them? Can put up with them? Hate them?

How can I advertise have you got a link. Most of the ads are appropriate but some are off the wall a bit.

I don't mind them as they are very unobtrusive at the bottom of the page and to be honest i take no notice of them. As you say most are relevant. I miss the latest posts bit on the homepage though, which used be where the ads are now.

If it brings in a bit of revenue for what is the definitive RIB resource online then it is well deserved. Keep up the good work on the great site JK

Makes no differance to me, just noticed one as it had a picture of something or another. Thaught ya might be giving into avitars

Personally I dont mind em as ya don't have to click on em if you don't want to. Nothings free in life and ya have to get the dosh somewhere to run the site.

How does it work - do ya get .00000000000000001p it someone clicks on an add ??????

Personally, I really quite like them.
They give a more "professional" feel to the webpage, sort of "rounds it off" for me.
Some of them, (I confess) I have actually looked at as well.

Looks a bit dodgy with all the inflatable rubber ads etc at the bottom of each page. Bit Ann Summers (I've only heard about those places you understand)

You can advertise via Google Adwords. I don't know if there's any way that you can guarantee that your ads would appear here, but I guess that anything with relevant keywords would have a fighting chance. It only costs a few quid to give it a try, so might be worth an experiment!

I get an undisclosed amount per click. It's all a bit weird because only Google know what the advertiser is paying for the click, and only Google know how they split that with the site host. It goes against the grain a bit, but it is hassle free (which is important!) and may bring in a contribution to the RIBnet coffers.

Some other sites are using the adverts a bit more aggressively, and by the sounds of things they are getting good results. Look at www.bikeforums.net for instance -- they have adverts interspersed in the threads and encourage people to buy a subscription (for a modest fee) which means they don't see the ads. It's not particuarly a model that I want to use here, but it's not something I would rule out at this stage.

I can only agree that the ads add to the site, as long as they do not become more obtrusive, I think we have to trust John to balance his obvious need for revenue against our need for hassle free surfing.

However, I had an interesting reaction when trying to open one of the ads this morning, for a company selling engine manuals. It resulted in an 'Access Denied. This site does not conform to accepted standards for company internet usage' With the result that an e-mail was sent to my boss informing him of my indiscression. Normaly I get the emails when the Ladies that work for me are checking the latest additions to the Ann Summers catalogue.

At work our internet use is closely monitered but very liberal in what is deemed suitable. The only time I've ever had a problem is when I tried to access an American Gadgets site that unknown to me was a front for selling AK47's, hand guns, crossbows, etc. There must be something on the site that our Big Brother did not like. Trouble is I've not seen it again at home tonight to have a look.

Luckily my boss lives in the real world and it was not a problem.

Just a quick question. Is it correct to say that the people who have the adds pay Google per cick and you (RIBNet) gets some money for putting them if they are clicked. Is that right?

It's still virtual so far!

It initially looked encouraging, but as the novelty has worn off the number of clicks has declined markedly.

I guess that the relatively limited number of ads is part of the problem, as they are being repeated endlessly. It may also be that the position is too unobtrusive and that people have become blind to them (I know I have!).

I certainly wouldn't want to to encourage people to click on the adverts simply to bump up my results. That wouldn't be fair on the advertisers and goes against the spirit of the Adsense scheme.

I do hope that some of the adverts are intersting enough for you to want to click on them though
