WAFIs aside, there were plenty of other "big guns" in that marina. I note that while the RNLI managed to extract themselves from the fray, the Border Force RIB wasn't so lucky.

Quick delivery to Wales soon so...

A sad day for all concerned.

It will be interesting to see whether the marina succumbed to conditions within the design loads or outside them.

Whilst I doubt whether the average boat owner would ever check what environmental and / or loading conditions a marina is designed to withstand, I wonder whether the RNLI or government agencies do a check and then make their own assessment as to whether they consider it fit for purpose.

At least a couple of wafis which have unfurled jibs and won’t have helped themselves. I wonder when they were last visited and if the insurer has a view on leaving unnecessary windage aloft over winter.

Storm Emma and Holyhead Marina

I hope no-one here and anything afloat on this marina. It looks like it broke up completely. The destruction was like nothing I've ever seen in these parts. Some of the pictures would bring a tear to the eye.

Wow that looks like the RNLI could have lost a £5M boat - luckily it doesn't appear to have been caught there this year.

The marina does appear rather exposed but no matter what you build it seems there will always be that one weather event. Had they piled the windward side it probably would have prevented this. Once a single line failed it had enough weight and windage to take everything with it.

Events like this just underline what an incredible job the lighthouse builders did in previous centuries.

Smart move by the RNLI after seeing the threat level last year. What a shame others didn't bale too but of course by the time they realized how serious it was, the option to move was probably gone. They likely had nowhere to go anyway.
I spent 5 hours one night looking at my RIB on an exposed mooring a few years back where a F5-6 forecast proved seriously understated and the direction out by 90 degrees. All I could do was watch it snatch at the mooring -hard enough to continuosly sink the mooring buoy- until the Spring tide abated. Horrible feeling to just have to hope, even worse for these unfortunate owners when the worst happened.

It will often be very difficult to get proper insurance for the marina, because of the hige risk of injury in bad weather.

The marina probably has good liability waivers in the leases with the individual boat owners. If I’m right the cases will be between the incurance company to the boat owners and the boat owners.
