Most are simply plastic. Most are also just a squared off U shaped bit that hold the radio at each side and bolt to the mounting surface at the bottom. Would be a snap to make your own out of aluminum or stainless.
Though, to be honest, I can't remember seeing a VHF mount fail, either. The radio's themselves, yes, the mounts, no.
