Serious Question - Where does all the gunge come from ?

Just removed the rear seat structure from my Rib for access to do a few jobs, after a long year of lots of trips at sea the rear behind the seat into the back of the stern structure is filthy, a kind of brownish gunge build up.

So where does that gunge come from, is it just rain water or sea water or a mixture of rain water + sea water + air bourne grime = gunge.

Anyone know the answer.

Probably a bit of algae in there from some sea water making it even more rank.
