Puppy out for first ride

WX is looking very good today so we're planning on taking our little Dobermann pup out for his first boat trip. He has an LJ and we're only going to trundle up the Hamble River for 20 minutes or so, so that he can hopefully get his sealegs. If he does, maybe we'll stick our nose out into Southampton Water for a bit.

Any advice will be gratefully received as this will be a first for us.

Well, that went really well. He really enjoyed it, even taking himself off around the deck and climbing up onto the seats. It's wierd because he doesn't like the car. He was totally relaxed. We only went up the Hamble to Swanwick and back - about an hour and he really seemed at home and he kept trying to pull the kill cord out! I think it was the cork float on the key he was after.

We'll do it again next week and hopefull get him out into the Solent a bit, but slowly, slowly catch a monkey. He's only 4 months old so we don't want to wreck his legs and joints. Anyway pics below

He now likes to be known as 'Captain Basil'

Thank you. He is beautiful, but is going through his teething stage so my hands and arms resemble something close to a colander at the moment

He looks so mellow in the pictures. My ill-trained mangy mutts bounce all over my boat, and one even jumped out to try to grab a bird when we were speeding along roughly 200 feet from shore. Try hauling a 60+ pound boxer/german shepard mix over the tubes to get her back in.

Great success well done.

All our four dogs over our lifetime have been boating dogs. We just take them as if its the most normal thing and they have all been fine. Here our new boy Tazz last year at 13 weeks on his first trip on the water albeit the river to get started.

All we had to watch was chewing boat bits! Btw the arms will recover.

Oh my!! what breed is he? He's lovely. He looks like a Tasmanian Devil.

Yeah, the skin heals quickly. After 4 GSDs and 4 JRTs I know all about that. We thought we would do something different this time and go for a cross between the two Seriously though, he is an absolute little dear, and so loving.

Ahh yes the clue is in the name Tazz which was his breeders nickname for him... because of looks not behaviour they said he reminded them of a Tasmanian Devil... I'm not so sure... he has his moments.

He's a German Spitz... our second after two previous larger Spitz types.

Still confined to the river (us rather than him) this is more how he looks more grown up.

He is beautiful, though that coat must take some looking after. One reason we went for a Dobie this time - minimal grooming and hair shedding.

We are lucky at home daughter is a keen DIY groomer so brushes him through several times a week. The undercoat does shed from time to time as it is now... think carpet tumbleweed.

Yeah, go on, you know it makes sense

Just be aware that they will do their utmost to destroy everything you own, plus your skin and bones until they are about 9 months old, then they will repay you with undying love and affection, and protection.

I already have 2 big dogs and 3 cats. So, it doesn't make sense. But I'm a sucker for big sad eyes and a wet nose.

Coast in Cowes are dog and puppy friendly.
We took our cocker there when he was about 5 months old.
