To throw my two penneth in, i too have just taken out insurance with Porthcawl. Really helpful and significantly cheaper than other quotes I received (for the same level of cover as far as i can see).

You can't moan at £135 either can ya mate?
Mine covers me for it being left on a mooring from April to October too. I'm already insured with another company but when I asked for a price to update my policy for it to live on it's new mooring the price increase made it cheaper to give Porthcawl a bell.

Just hope if the worst happens (touch wood) that they pay out!

I'm with em too. My little SR4 left on a mooring fully comp during the season then third party fire and theft in the winter and fully comp if out of the water, can't remember how much but were the cheapest and actually had an idea what I was talking about.

Hi I am glad some folks are getting good deals from them but I have tried them twice over the last two years latest last month an they are no cheaper than Euromarine who I have been with for six years now. is there a secret to your quot info thats allowing you to be quoted such big reductions?

Think it's down to location mostly?

They? Just think about who handles the claim if you're unfortunate enough to have to make one. The broker? (in this case Porthcawl) - No. The Underwriter? - Yes. Who's underwriting these policies? I hope for your sakes it isn't Aviva.

No idea Richard, so instead of playing guessing games perhaps you would like to enlighten us what the problem is with one of the major UK insurers. Or is they have turned down your claim for a puncture on a pram which caused all the toys to fall out.

Are you out on the boat this year ?

Pete

If I recall the TV advert correctly: "Aviva is the new name for Norwich Union"

Thank you. You are of course correct. The information is on their web site and has been on their documents and stationery for some years.

I answered this thread to get people to think for themselves, instead of just following the RIBnet party line and jingoism that has developed over the last few years (ie Seariders are great, Ribeyes are crap, Porthcawl is the best insurance broker, and anyone who disagrees is an idiot and a troll for posting their opinions).

I used to use Norwich Union for all my car and house insurance until their prices rose year on year until they weren't competitive any more. However, I still get a quote from them at each renewal - it's worth it for the comedy value.

Anyway, back to boat insurance... We shopped around for competetive quotes a few years ago and Porthcawl undercut our current insurer by about £20 with a Norwich Union policy. I had also been in correspondence with another broker about Norwich Union policies, but had deleted the other broker from my shortlist when they told me that Norwich Union wouldn't cover a cross-channel trip under any circumstances, and foreign cruising would be limited to 12miles off the shore of any other European country. Hmmmm. Anyway, Stephen Knipe at Porthcawl assured me that the NU policies he sells would satisfy our requirements, including 12 months in commission and European cover (ie the standard Brest - Elbe clause). Despite his hard work to get our business, and I should add that he was very helpful in posting policy documentation for inspection, we found after very careful reading of the policy wording that the underwriters were not offering us the same level of cover as our Haven Knox-Johnston policy from Curtis Marine.

I have used Curtis Marine since 2003 on the recommendation of another RIBnet member who made a large claim and was very satisfied with the settlement.

You may not of heard of the case that the Insurance Ombudsman settled a couple of yeas ago where a RIB was stolen and the claim was refused. If I remember correctly, it took the claimant over two years and considerable expense to reach a decision from the ombudsman in his favour. I don't know if any confidentiality agreements were signed as part of this settlement.

Richard you make valid points but to class anyone who agrees that Porthcawl are good, or people who's budgets limit them and in that limit Seariders are about the best as not thinking for themselves is a bad way to put it across.
In fact you just come across as an arrogant cock.

Nout wrong with Seariders Richard. To buy, moor and insure my boat will have cost less than £1500, it even came with some fuel. Bargain.

Slightly OT but it does involve Norwich Union and insurance (car)

Twice recently had renewal from NU for car policies, first time £1400 for son,
shopped around and finally re-quoted as new customer with NU direct and £ 795

Wife's renewal came in at £441, tried to re-quote but it wouldn't let me, kept saying already a customer, renewal is, etc.etc. I then transposed her first/last name, put our holiday home address (same postcode)
same DOB identical car and £251 Was advised to speak to 'retentions'.

Not sure if they are all 'at it' but worth a try.
