Outboard security

I've just realised that I've not been complying with my boat insurance conditions!!

It says the engine should be secured with an anti-theft "device" - and I don't have one!

For a 30HP engine bolted to the transom, can anyone recommend anything please?

Something like a Mcgard bolt lock should satisfy most insurance requirements.

they will cut the transom out if you make it too hard to unbolt - its a tricky one.

Agree, but without an approved lock you’ll get nowt from most insurers.

Example from Craftinsure;

“Any outboard motor will be attached to the craft with a purpose manufactured anti theft device, and a note of the serial no of the outboard will be kept.”

I was asleep on my old boat once in southampton and me and my buddy in the next boat over were woken to the sound of some scrotes trying to nick the engines of one of the boats on the quayside. This being a 2.5 litre mercury V6 they were trying to nick! Not really practical to lift on your own - but that didn't stop them trying.

Also remove regularly and lube like every trip or it will need cutting off (yes pretty easy to cut off)

Agreed about lubing but not cutting off. The volcano would be difficult so they would grind off the bolt head on the other side. On one of my boats I welded on some bits of stainless bar to make it into a T bolt. Maybe cost the thief another few minutes effort.

Thief isn’t worried about chainsawing the transom…… you might be….hear of people putting stainless caps on transom or stainless plates inside transom

I was removing an engine recently which had a volcano bolt that I didn't have the key for. It came off quicker with the grinder than the other 3 I actually had to unscrew[emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]
With the availability of modern battery tools there's not much slows a thief down

If someone is determined enough they will get your engine no matter what.

A decent approved lock e.g. Volcano may deter them and look for something easier, but most important thing is to ensure you can prove you've fitted the security demanded by your insurers. I take photos of outboard lock / trailer wheel lock in position and keep receipts as evidence.
