interesting that it doesn't seem like a particularly high wave either.

Funny, that was my first thought too. Like you say, not the biggest wave in the world, it just broke under them, dropped the starboard side and lifted the portside - hoopla!

I almost got beached once with my old six meter in what were very benign conditions - I've never forgotten the power behind even the smallest waves...

As a rule of thumb if you are hit broad sides by a breaking wave higher than the beam of your boat it will turn you turtle.
