no fuel in containers

Fuel garage,s are stopping people filling containers up at the pumps , i,v been in to 3 now ,& all have signs up , maybe its because of the riots , it might be spreading around the country Who knows ?

Someone did say something about this earlier this week (agri college in peaceful Scotland

can't get fuel for quad bikes) but I haven't heard anything official - anybody got chapter & verse on this?

If it's correct several of us will have to find something else to do...

Hmmm I hope it isn't being tightened up... I'll be carrying a 22l tank, 12l tank + 5l can to Scotland next week. All will be empty for our safety (and weight saving) on the journey and I hope to fill them all up together at the small lochside filling station when we arrive.

All the superstores garage,s are turning you away & Also BP, don,t know about any other garage , iv just managed to get all mine filled at a small asian garage down a country lane , tesco,s chap told me that the police had put a stop on it because of the riots, & i live 11 miles away from where the riots are , so it could well hit other place,s , at least i can go on the Anglesey cruise now :lol;

That sort of attitude would put lots of people out of work around here. Refusing to serve in cans would probably cause a riot

- that is if you could find enough people - which is most unlikely considering the population density in these parts.

There was a post on another forum on the 10th saying that all Morrison petrol stations had banned cans from their forecourts.

I would call your local Trading Standards lot on Monday. You are being refused supply of goods that are to be used for lawful purpose.

Do they really think that rioters buy the petrol for bombs??

No doubt the supermarket and petrol station HQs see it as being much easier to make law abiding customers suffer, rather than introducing something effective.

A lot of garages have limited giving fuel, other than in to the vehicle, to a 5L plastic approved can. They have done it for years in many places. It is more to do with the old health and safety.

They can't be sure that what you are filling is designed to carry fuel and they could consequently melt. In addition, even if they are approved containers, if you fill 3 25L tanks then put them in the car boot, with windows up, the fumes could easily fill the car and quite possibly cause a "big" problem when you then use your mobile!

The garage on Anglesey by the bridge for example, won't let you fill up until they have seen the can at the counter to check it is suitable and stamped as a fuel container. Makes sense really, there are some numpties out there.

Actually - it may not be their choice. From what I read elsewhere on 'tinternet the decision was made by COBRA.

Also I'd love to know what anyone can do about someone refusing to sell ANYONE ANYTHING if its for a lawful purpose. Not aware that the law says you have to...

Anyone tried taking the boat and fill the tank in the boat...? Or find an ASDA that isn't manned ;-)

I always go to the counter and ask having left the outboard tank where they can see it from the cash desk. I just say is it OK if I fill the boat tanks and so far it's been a yes both in home and holiday areas.

Only if you leave the vents open - otherwise they are fume-tight.

Morrisons Fort William was No problem filling 22l containers ,But the Esso garage up the road had a problem with it., Tesco in Dumfries and Inverness on the A9 had no Problems either.
ASDA in 24hr Automatic Card pay at pump fuel was the easiest.
I,m sure in scotland any small garage will be glad of the business. Prices are a bit steep in places , upto £1.52 per litre.

It's an old rule that is being enforced rather than something new - my local garage questioned me once and told me that they shouldn't really let me fill more than 5l in plastic containers (I think it's 20l for metal ones). There has been a sign in most of my local garages for years on the side of the pump, along with don't eat, smoke etc - take a look I suspect they'll be on most forcourts.

I leave them in the boat now and they are happy - probably because they can't see them
