New MAIB reports - 1 RIB incident, 1x powerboat race

Thought these might be of general interest:

Aberscotch rib accident...

http://www.maib.gov.uk/publications/...ersoch_rib.cfm

...once again we are reminded of the importance of wearing a kill cord. All though I would have hoped my last remaining crew member would not jump out the boat or at least kill the engine first .

Probably worth checking your console is secure to the deck, as that seemed to be the root cause.

Portland powerboat race...

http://www.maib.gov.uk/publications/..._powerboat.cfm

...seems to be attributing the cause to poor race/class management and training, if anything... ...but I wasn't convinced that the recommendations or actions taken would prevent a repeat.

These reports should be compulsory reading - always best to learn by some other poor bugger's mistakes.

Thanks for posting them!!!

I remember it well

Although there are a lot of accidents on Abersoch Beach

too many boats and too many inexperienced boaters in a relativley small area

and Jetskis are the worst

Just read the Abersoch report - the poor driver is about as blameless as could be expected. Ok so he wasn't wearing a kill cord but he had slowed down for the moorings - you can't really blame him for not expecting the console to fall over!!!

Quite agree - I launch off South Beach Bridlington. Buoyed area for launching. Once launched - supposed to move away and to 'play' elsewhere. PWC's ignore this and hang around posing and crossing over at speed doing stupid stunts where other people are trying to launch & recover. Half of them can't control their machines properly. Shore personnel given up trying to control them - should ban anyone ignoring the safety rules. Not all like this but the majority seem to be a bunch of mindless idiots.

A good quality paintball gun stops them
