Demise of Atlantic College Inshore Lifeboat

Sad to see the end of the RNLI connection at Atlantic College

"The RIB – a combination of rigid hull and large inflatable buoyancy tubes – was patented by former UWC headmaster Rear Admiral Desmond Hoare in 1969."

Just out of interest, does anyone know if that is actually true?

John, I think it was strictly Rear Admiral Hoare who owned the patent but sold it to the RNLI for £1... some details here on the IPO website.

RIBase
They have a range of proto type Atlantic Ribs there - some made of wood as early mock ups through to original hull designs in grp. We had great fun playing with them when I ran a lifeguards course at the site.

We were told at the time that they designed not only the Atlantic craft lifeboat we see in use now (21) but the actual idea of combining SIB and a hull to make the RIB.

Thanks. I didn't know that anyone had actually got a patent. I'm surprised the RNLI never capitalised on it!

Seem to remember a story that when the Avon/Galt partnership first showed their first GRP sea rider (though Galts had an earlier rib called the Sea Raider )at the paris boat show about 1968 with Avon showing their earlier wooden hulls the year before ,
the French police confescated the Avon RIB boat as it infringed some french copyright ,
transpired later on that a french student had spent some time at Atlantic collage a few years earlier went back to France and took out a patent with regards fixing plywood to an inflatable boat .

and yes John it is true that Desmond Hoare sold the patent rights to the RNLI for the nominal sum of £1 and he never cashed the cheque so they say .
