Delta 5.5 Type/size of Engine

Guys

I am doing a complete rebuild of a Nice Delta.

Good ideas how to power her up. ?

I am considering Merc, dont know if I go opti or 4 str. Suzuki is also an option !

Which HP ? 2 or 4 st? Merc or Suzi ?

I will use it for leisure, waterski, small trips etc.

Please help.

Cheers Thomas

Merc 75/90 2 stroke would be good if you could get one. The older style 75/90 four stroke would be ok but a bit heavy on the back end. Optimax 3 cylinder maybe a bit to heavy too. Watch this space for the New Mercury mid range four stroke coming out next year...
Oh wait maybe i should have kept that a secret?

Go for the biggest you can. The hull can handle pretty much anything so you'll be safe. This one has a 225hp two stroke........

225? Well I guess one sits a long way forward on the rib in question. I had a 200 on a 5.6 and it was quite unbalanced and not fun to drive, but it did look very cool. In the end I went with a 90 and couldn't be happier.

Admittedly it was a different hull so it may not apply.

Are you sure the delta in the picture is a 5.5? She looks bigger!

I had a suzuki df140 on a 5.5 destroyer and it was to much, with 2/3 up and 100l of fuel you couldn't hold it flat out as it went into a speed wobble. With 5-6up it was great but most of my trips there was only 2 on board and you had to be very careful. Super engine though and even more economical than the dt75 that it replaced. Have one on my new toy too

Delta 5-5 is very well balanced with a 90 hp 2 stroke on the back, a good compromise between performance and economy. Option 4 with 90 Opti

I have a Delta Dash 5.5M with a Yam 130 two stroke on the back.
Blistering performance all the way to 42 knots.
Just about to do a retube and small refurb on her.
The max she can take on the plate is 140hp.
I agree though that a 90 is a good balance of power and economy.
At full power I use 20ltrs per hour!!!
Much less of course if I behave sensibly...............
But I rarely do!

Thought they're rated to 130hp. The 3cyl 125hp opti is te same block as the 75/90/115. Or a 130 etec perhaps.

There's a Delta 5.5 in our Yard with an e-TEC 90. Seems a perfect combination

How old is it?

Some of the early Deltas were Humber hulls fitted out by Delta.....

(I'm talking early / mid 80s early here)
