Clipper race next Sunday

Can anyone confirm the yachts leaving Southampton/Cowes will be going via Hurst and Needles next Sunday? Could be worth a view close up.

Definiitely East
Race Start Schedule

Worth noting that Ocean Village will be closed to everyone unless you have a booked mooring as the quay is full. There will be some failry strict controls in place for safety of all, loads of marshall boats will be out to help.

Also Notice to Mariners- http://www.cowesharbourcommission.co...eWorldRace.pdf

Clipper Round the World Race start Cowes.

Clipper 2011-2012 Round the World Yacht Race start 31 July 2011

Notice is hereby given jointly with QHM Portsmouth and ABP Southampton that on Sunday, 31 July 2011, following a Parade of Sail in Southampton Water, The Clipper 11 – 12 Round the World Yacht Race will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line, Cowes at 1630.

Depending on wind direction, the Race will start either to the west – the competitors rounding East Lepe Buoy before returning to the east - or start directly to the east. The 10 competing yachts will then proceed towards Stokes Bay, leaving to starboard a large orange inflatable marker buoy approximately 0.4 nautical miles southwest of the Stokes Bay Sailing Club, before passing between the Forts and exiting the eastern Solent:

1. Each competing yacht will be accompanied by a dedicated marshal boat and these can be identified by the orange ‘MARSHAL’ Flag and the Clipper Race Flag that they will be flying. In addition, there will be a further 15 official Marshal Craft escorting the competing yachts out of the Solent.

2. All spectator craft are requested to keep a minimum of 100 metres clear of the competing yachts and comply with instructions issued by the official Marshals and those shown on the Race Safety Information Sheet.

I have a few more to add later when i resize them.

Sure was lumpy out there as they all went down southampton water. To the idiot that was watersking down southampton water in the middle of the fleet of boats. you need your head reading!!

Thought the Marshal boats did a great job controling the number of boats and on the whole, were friendly at the same time!

Yep, agree there were some mad people out there in their boats, A fishing boat was fishing in Southampton water just on the edge of the main channel and stayed put as the fleet was appearing, that then went between to Clipper yachts about twenty feet away.

As the marshals will say the likelyhood to control any such fleet was never going to happen to keep all boats 100metres away or to stay behind HMS Illustrious.

Still was a great sight and wonderful to see such a variety of yachts, dinghys, RIBs, cruisers all out to support and watch.

There are some special people who can leave home for a year for the adventure. We had aboard some crew joining later on future legs on two of the yachts but also a wife and two youngsters whos father was out for the whole voyage!

All very well organised from Ocean Village out to the start and fleet run. Looking forward to more images as I was fairly busy keeping watch

Fully agree. i thought the blessing and the sending off of the yachts was well done and quite emotional! great to see so many boats to support the fleet and give them a good send off! it was nice to see so many smiling faces on the race boats as they head out on what will without doubt be the adventure of a lifetime.

I liked the slogan "raced by people like you" lets not forget for many of these people they had never set foot on a boat before signing up!!

So what happened to the fool? Did the harbour office or bill get him, I thought I saw some crazy things out there but that is the most stupid

I should also publically say well done on being the chief safety marshall. you had your work cut out and it went very well

The police had a polite word - nothing to stop him, but they advised him it wasn't necessarily the safest of pastimes...

Thanks - it was great to have so many volunteers for Marshal and Media Duties (34 ribs volunteered in the end, including two brand new XS Demo Craft), and they performed admirably. CJL from Northern Exposure took control of one of the teams, as did Brian C from Ashby Powerboat School, and we were joined by a fleet from UKSA for the start.

Overall the day went well - I wish we'd had more spectator handouts printed, but the ones we did give out were well recieved, and we had no reported incidents, and best of all none of the race yachts hit anything!

Here's most of them getting ready to depart after the briefing at Shamrock:

T'was an interesting day, rushing around telling folks off, whilst having two dirty great flags strapped to the 'A' frame be nice he says, haha
Tried my best to break the boat, back and forth up and down Southampton water, even thought I had suceeded once, but no joy, it broke me instead.
But it was a good day, with lots of sun, I even seem to have gone a little crispy
For a small navy vessel, I thought Lusty was quite a sight, as were the race boats. Not sure how I would cope for a year with a load of strangers on the same boat
