Advice on mooring a 7m rib on floating mooring

Hello all (newbie alert)

I need some advice please!! I am getting my boat next week and
she is being moored on a floating/mud mooring in Kingsbridge estuary
Devon.

What material to attach the mooring line to the chain? Rope or chain
and should I use a karabina?? The document doesn’t show to me clearly
how the rope or chain should be attached.

Many thanks for your help and advice.

Always attach like to like materials if you are leaving for any real time. So rope to rope metal to metal. This is to prevent wear through chafing

Carabina or clips (many types on the market) work well if you would prefer not to tie knots, but many are wary they can come loose

Learn to tie a bowline. It will help in nearly all situations [emoji106]

We keep our 8.5t hard boat on a swing mooring, ours is a rope riser & we have two lines looped through the rope eye on the riser which we take one to either cleat on each side of the bow we loop the spliced eye under then over the cleat to prevent it jumping off. Most rented moorings you need to supply your own 'junk' which is the final attachment from riser to boat. Its the most critical piece of the jigsaw & you may be best having one made by a local rigger or mooring expert. I'm surprised that drawing posted shows a spring gate carabiner as we were advised these were a complete no no by the guy who maintains our mooring. They can flick off in a heartbeat if the boat is bouncing around, they will also damage the fibreglass if they come into contact on a regular basis. I worked in the sub sea oil industry & spring gate carabiners were banned from anything safety critical as they were a know hazzard. You can get locking gate clips just be very careful in your choice if you go down that route. Every boat & mooring is different, & requires slightly different equipment hence asking a specialist locally with relevant experience being the best option.

Hi, I work in Kingsbridge and keep ours on a swinging mooring in Salcombe. I've tried a few set ups over the last few years and I'd be happy to meet up and show you our set up and have a look at what might work for you.

All the best

Jim
