Some help with her name...

Hey all.

I'm still undecided exactly what to name my SIB...

The day I got her, I was sitting there debating names and looked up to see two buzzards circling. It's not a particularly common sight around here and it seemed to fit nicely. So now I'm torn between "Bird of Prey" or "Raptor".

I thought I'd see what you folks think?

I've also quickly knocked up some graphics options. I'm thinking of putting the name and logo on the spray dodger.

So what do you all think? Any preferences on name/typeface/logo?

Thanks,
G

I always say to myself when thinking of a name for a boat....

'What will the marina think of me if i radio in for fuel/mooring'

e.g.

'Marina 'xxxx' this is rib Titan Uranus, i require a temporary mooring for a 6m rib'

I also consider what the coastguard may ask me in the case of an emergency.

Mayday Mayday Mayday....this is rib 'I'mhavingamidlifecrisisandwentoutandboughtaribwit haverylongname'

...then they ask me to spell it phonetically.!!

I like short and sweet, but then sometime your are stuck with whatever it comes with..!!

(don't rename IMO...i did it once and had endless problems with that boat.!)

In this case there no sign that she ever had a name. I think it would be unlucky not to give her a new name.

I'm leaning towards 'Raptor' because it also looks nice as a logotype. But I do like 'Bird of Prey'. It has a certain ring to it.
Aaaaaand I'm back where I started

A name for a small inflatable needs care...

Bird of Prey seems to me to be along the lines of Whispering Wind, Dragons Flight, Misty Morning and the like that suit £250k+ yachts.

Names like Terminator and Renegade suit craft you expect to maintain 40kts in a force 6.

And of course Seaduction for the 32ft plastic wannabe gin palace.

Keep it short and modest for a SIB.

Ha ha yes I was aware of the unintended secondary meaning but it is an inherited name and you are the first person I've come across who's known the obscure "down with the kids" meaning. Even my Uni age teens had never heard that use.

I do have a spare set of name letters though so I could go for Mordin... which doesn't search too badly.

You can find anything there if you look... can't you Willk... if you will forgive me...

Well when the name first came to us I did ponder on the suitability of its main meaning... but thought well I've got an air rifle so it's fair enough!

If desperation strikes, there are always the random adjective-noun generators on the internet. Most of the pairs are rubbish but a nugget may arise.

Hugh.

PS. Keep looking upwards. I took a photo with twelve buzzards in the same frame last year at Springhead Hill!

My first was called Tompot - after the tompot blenny, a small and characterful fish often seen on inshore dives.

The second was Vital Spark, after Para Handy's Clyde puffer. I spent a lot of time around the sea lochs.

Vital Spark was chewed to death by mice. The new Zodiac has just been named "Mousetrap".

On the whole, naming a boat after a predator seems to go best with big fast ones. I agree with the other poster upthread. For a SIB, I think something slightly low key and possibly ironic works best.
