One person's daily setup SIB outfit (Aerotec) - Page 5

Oh yes... finally got the bow trolley handle modded. As suplied in the first image the handle was about 20cm too low and needed me to stoop to tow it along.... really uncomfortable.

Needed a bend in the 25mm stainless tube. Thought of asking on the village website if a plumber or electrician could do it for a drink but couldn't bear for then to get it "slightly" wrong "mate". Looked to hire one but £30-£40 for a day and the fuel/faff to collect and return.

So bought these Chinese benders from Ebay for £80 on an offer a few days ago to DIY...

First try and my vice wasn't strong enough to withstand the force needed to start the bend..... something was going to break. So I bolted its base directly to the bench. Still a lot of force needed (added 40cm to the lever length) but went OK.

Result not quite as neat close up as the guide shoe had casting imperfections which imprinted onto the tube. I filed those imperfections out on the shoe as per image and any future bends would be neater.

But overall the result I wanted and I have another tool in stock.

Thats one pretty expensive bend David It may save a visit to the physio

but now your going to have to start fabricating all sorts of garden tubular furniture or hide the box away where you wont ever see it again so it doesnt ping you each time you pass it.

I made the mistake of buying an inexpensive tig welder for just one job and it's caused havoc over the years.

I have a pragmatic view on such one-off expenditure by looking at sibbing costs in the round... besides many other activities they're peanuts really.... so it's all good.

Re the post winter art installation unveiling... well dad said no length of pipe is safe in our place now. He's right... I've been eyeing up some scrap copper lengths in the garage loft with a view to bending them... just because I can.

I have been reading this thread and wondered if the Hobby for you is more about making things for your SIB as opposed to actually getting out on the water

Even if unwittingly bit of a red rag comment there JamesLong.

Life naturally ebbs and flows... and sadly there's more ebbing than flowing with those I'm responsible for at the moment so I find the upgrades and fettling a very rewarding addition when opportunities to get to sea are limited.

But overall I've been happy to get on the water in one craft or another for 61 of my 65 years hence if this is a brief lean period so be it.

Having said all that my main thrust with sibbing has always been about getting afloat at every opportunity and I look forward to that resuming.

Agree. Fettling is great relaxation during the periods when life and family commitments keep you off the water. Being on the water tends to be a personal indulgence and so sits at the bottom of a long list of more important duties in life. And given the last couple of years the few people who may not have fully appreciated that pecking order may have a better understanding today.

When life is busy being able to go and grab a couple of hours here and there to fettle is important and equally important, when you don't have a couple of hours but just a few minutes, being able to read about other people's fettling and outings is good.

So, like the vast majority of people who drop in to here, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to post up your fettlings, post the good advice that you do and fully sympathise that most of us can't get out on the water anywhere close to as much as we would personally like because our lives aren't just about us but mostly about those we have the great fortune to closely share it with.

However, if my impending glue sniffing event pencilled in for later this week goes awry then I'll be straight back to this particular thread blaming you and your bloody fettling for leading me astray.

I ditched my old tanks and went for Quicksilver 25 litre outboard fuel tank - Mercury - Mariner - 1200-8M0083451 | eBay although I didn't pay this much and now with valves closed no petrol smell, it's a miracle.

I think the person posing as JamesLong was just trying to wind me up... and to an extent succeeding due to the intense family pressure I was under then. Now there are calmer waters on the horizon so soon less fettle and more getting things wet.

But as we've all agreed fettling is a part of the pleasure... when I think back to dad with larger craft having painted hulls and varnished topsides there was a massive fettle to Nm travelled ratio.

I find that fettling makes up a big part of ownership of most things from motorcycles to cars to tools/machinery to even dare I say it, boats.
