On my scales which I believe to be accurate or at least near enough the Yam 15 2T weighs 37kg and the Tohatsu 9.8 2T 27kg. In any case the 10kg difference remains.

That's good to know as I feel that one day (maybe not as far off as I'd like to think! ) I'll have to make things a bit lighter.

Just checked my scales against a known weight and they are spot on. So perhaps all these two strokes are a little over the weights we often state for them.

My take is this

27 kg = Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke or 6 hp 4 stroke both quite easy to lift, carry and put on. 9.8 will plane 2 up and some stuff and will give ok performance at about 12 knots

37 kg = 15 hp 2 stroke heavy but with care can carry and lift and put on but can be a slight struggle. Excellent performance an potentially 18-20 knots

Anything over about 42 kg which I think is all 15 or greater 4 strokes can be done but you have to have a system, be young and strong and be very careful and use aids or other help. In my view this weight and over is an injury waiting to happen and not advisable. This weight and type of 4 stroke also generally has transport issues

I still don't understand why this Russian system for near effortless positioning on and off the transom and transportation of the outboard isn't popular over here, at least for those outboards with steering tubes like the Yamaha 15hp.






My thanks to those who commented on my ongoing problems, still waiting for biopsy results. Trying hard here to not side track the thread

It is a clever system and would suit some. For our use and the way we use the car it's too inflexible though as we don't fold the car seats but put the outboard in crossways or even in the rear seat footwell. Hence the need to free lift anything we have.

It would suit you if you were to change your habit and fold down a rear seat perhaps when 37kilo gets just too much you might revisit David

Hopefully getting out but sure to be the river, just to see how it runs for a couple of hours. Suitable weather days are harder to come by now though.

Hmm yes perhaps we should make the outward run against the river flow so in case of failure we can let the current do the work on the way back.

Pic shows regulator fitted to right of carb, red lead below is 12v DC. Sometimes it's mounted under the ignitors and cdi.

Hopefully it's fitted for you as it's useful.

It's odd as I have just that same finned device and from what I've seen so has every other Yamaha 15 2T. Despite the handbook showing the finned thing in illustrations it clearly states this is for an AC outlet for lighting and only for a 40-80w load.

But if anyone has found this is a regulated 12v outlet then that's even better.

For me though as I said above I no longer want to carry a 12v battery system.

In post 83 I mentioned I'd bought one of the budget generic outboard stand/trolleys but it was taller than my existing similar one and every few inches more I have to lift the outboard when vertical is difficult so time to mod.

I'd already made up a larger thicker faux transom when it first arrived as it came with an undersized rubbish bit of timber full of splits. In order to drop the timber a worthwhile amount I had to lower the pivot/crossover point of the tubes from the empty holes in the image to the new bolted through position. New holes drilled to relocate the timber then I cut off the excess from the vertical tubes as pictured. Moving the pivot point made the handles stick out a bit too far for the tight location this trolley is stored so I trimmed them back and replaced the grips.

It's made it much more useful for me with these minor changes. Love a fettle.

I have that same stand and they are quite good but a little flimsy. The main issue I have is getting a container full of water in place to wash the engine through. You mods look very useful. It is so often small things that make big differences in use

I also converted an old folding golf trolly which makes a very good transporter and folds very small
