New member need advice

First of all i would just like to say hello and the forum looks great. I've been using a 3.3m ali deck promarine with a 1961 10 hp evinrude sportwin . Anyway i've been after a new engine for a while with the other been so old and recently got a tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke and am now thinking about getting a seapro 3.4m ali deck which weighs 58kg .
Would this setup plane with me my mate and a bit of fishing gear we weigh about 28 st between us.

Thanks for any help

3.4m, 58kgs and 9.8hp 2 stroke (lightweight) outboard

I imagine you'd plane easily

I used to have a 3.6m honwave with 9.9 2 stroke and that has been on the plane with 4 adults,

Probably not, that sib is rated for at least a 9.9 or max 15 HP which are 250 cc engines. A 9.8 is only 170 CC. Invest well, test before buying if possible to be shure it will plane your combo...

Our experience with a Tohatsu 9.8 2-stroke was mostly on a 3.2m old (heavy) Zodiac with wooden floor. We ran it with two adults, dog and kit which would have made around 28st. It would always plane eventually but wouldn't hop up onto the plane in a couple of seconds as it would with a 15hp.

Swapping one of the adults for a child so dropping to 22st made it much more lively. Going up to 40st with two adults and two kids plus dog and kit meant ours was never going to plane.

Thanks for the help guys I may look into a 15 hp two stroke then but I'll give the tohatsu a try on my old boat first .I only give 600 quid for the tohatsu anyway so I should get my money back to put towards a bigger engine if I have to ship it on

If you like Tohatsu 2 strokes, buy a new or second hand 9.9 D2 and convert it to a 15 D2 for peanuts. Or a 15 HP. D2 are the latest versions available.

Europe is pretty much 4 stroke only for recreational use for that size new since iirc 2006. So its only 4 stroke models imported post to 2006 that are available now or s/h 2/4 stroke prior to that.

Equivalent engine now is 8/9.9hp 208cc twin 4-stroke that as far as i am aware can not be beefed up economically to 15hp as the 15/20hp 351cc is a much bigger engine approx double the weight of the old 9.9 2-stroke.

http://www.marineroutboards.co.uk/pd...chure%2011.pdf

So new 2 stroke has not been an option since beginning 2007.

Please someone correct me if i am wrong as it would be nice at some point for me to be able to up the power of my 9.9hp Mariner.

If yours is a 2 stroke Mariner 9.9 looking same as picture, surely it's a rebadged Tohatsu, Nissan, same model. If it has throttle rods instead of cable throttle system, you only need to buy the 15 HP cam and swap it + probably some + timing and carb adjustment depending on it's actual factory setting. Have the tech info if you need it.
