Then I dropped the gearbox for a look at the water pump. The impellor was very worn and the liner scored but we'd already ordered these so they were to hand with a new base gasket.
Before fitting back to the outboard I tested it in the tub with a cordless drill don't know if that's a well known trick?

Finally all points were lubricated and the floppy steering friction lever tightened up so it went properly from loose to tight.
Time for the bucket test. Started easily second pull with a steady idle and went in/out of gear OK... no stalling. Nice strong cooling tell tale jet. Set up the carb mixture and idle speed using my little tach... this model's mixture setting didn't have a blanking plug but a tamper-proof screw which can just be turned with exactly the right size screwdriver. Set 1.75 turns out. Ran at a fast idle for twenty mins with no misbehaving or overheating.
Repeated this same test on a second occasion and perfect.
The biggest test of all is David's had it out today on the river and reports were "it purrs".
So a good result after a somewhat odd combination of symptoms.
Having had real problems with the carb on my same model Mariner 9.9 after water ingress I feel I now know the inside of their carbs rather too well!

Likewise, a great job and very interesting read - wonderful to see people helping each other out with problems! I've been stripping and reassembling a much older 9.9 Johnson carb this weekend, and thankfully that now purrs too.

Thank you Fenlander
I bought this boat with the outboard in July and was a little crestfallen when I realised something was amiss with the outboard (understatement alert) anyhow I can say that the gods must have been looking upon me favourably as Fenlander took in my outboard as someone might take in a stray dog or cat. And he carefully and diligently sieved through all the issues and the outcome is just terrific! I used it for the first time today on the Great Ouse with my two boys and a perfectly pleasant sunny day. The motor purred and the cooling system worked perfectly. I couldn't test it at full throttle as even half throttle caused some outcries from moored up boat owners. I am grateful to this forum and to everyone who chipped in on this thread. And of course to Fenlander for taking the trouble and time to see the job through. I would have been very very stuck without the support from this forum and Fenlander's hand's on help.

Thanks for the comments. Always a pleasure to get a motor running well.
By chance another member has PM'd me about his Tohatsu vesion of this engine with a carb that keeps overflowing and the dealer are advising a new carb... ouch re cost. I do wonder if it's the same float issue though as on the above OB where there was nothing wrong with the orifice in the carb body and the pin valve wasn't worn so it could only be the plastic float had distorted over time.

The old silicon in the carb trick. LOL
Seen that before on a vehicle. It ran about the same, like crapola.
Pretty lucky the noise was just the pull starter assembly.

Another late nights reading last night, sure my wife thinks I'm watching porn on TV!
She didn't believe me when I said I'd been reading a brilliant thread by Fenlander problem solving and fixing an OB.
Fantastic David

Really interesting. Its almost enough to make me want to buy a broken outboard to have a tinker with.
