Keep an eye on your telltale (pee stream) and watch out for weeds !

I was out on the water this morning with a new friend.

We were testing a new to me Johnson 15 HP 2 stroke, he was offering.

The river was shallow and full of weeds. We ran into a patch, and I immediately noticed a change in pitch from the outboard , followed by a complete lack of water from the tell tale (no pee) followed by SMOKE !

The weeds had completely blocked the intake.

Killed the engine immediately, and took off the cowling. After the smoke cleared, the engine was hot, but not enough to burn skin. After letting the outboard cool down, we restarted it, things looked normal and we went back.

I did a compression test on land, and it gave a reading of 136 PSI and 138 PSI . Yes, 136 & 138. Unheard of ! I bought it immediately.

Initially, I thought the impeller burned out, causing the smoke. But because it started peeing out the tell tale after a restart, I knew it was working fine. Instead what likely had happened was the unburnt fuel and oil mixture was being burned off and smoking due to the increase in temperature.

Keep an eye out and avoid vegetation boyos. It can easily destroy your motor in seconds in you're not paying attention.

2 adults, 22L tank, and misc items on a Zodiac C310 , and we still managed to hit 35 KMH

The outboard had not ran at all this year.
Last year was used twice.

Due for a carb cleaning, new plugs, reset and sync all the linkages per factory specs, new gear oil, a new prop & overall tuning.

If you have a center console RIB, you can install a water pressure gauge. Simple and quick. I did so on mine and love it. No longer turning around every minute or so.

I replaced the impeller and vermatherm with OEM parts.

Replenished the gear oil. And filed down the propeller.

What's interesting is he's using a 9.5 x 12 prop where normally every factory prop is 9.5 x 10 . I noticed only the slightest loss in low end torque , accelleration , but gained a bit in top speed .
