Just browsing and came across hangkai. They are selling 6hp 2 stokes for £440. Impellers are available from China and spark plugs won't be a problem. So from a service point of view there shouldn't be a problem.
Anybody got any genuine feedback on these?

Might be of interest to you, did you read this already?

Advertised as 6hp but noisy and probably half that in reality looking at youtube. My advice? Get a used 3.5hp Tohatsu/Merc/Mariner and fit a new 5hp carb which can be had for £30 and alloy prop (£15).

No you can uprate the 2.5 to 3.3 but that's the limit.

For the same price or LESS you can get a name brand quality build used outboard with low hours and get a much bigger displacement engine for more torque and top speed.

I'd rather have a popular engine that millions of other people have, where parts are still being manufactured , and hundreds if not thousands of warehouses keep parts in stock. I know that I can always buy a broken parts motor for less than the cost of a single new part, and keep my primary engine going forever . Literally.

I service my own, but most shops won't even want to service off brands. Sometimes you get what you pay for . And often you'll spend more in the long run , after upgrading two or three times , you're actually spending more. You're better off getting the good one in the beginning . It's cheaper in the long run .

Yes the 3.5 is a four stroke and you can lift a 2.5 to 5.0hp,
the only difference between 2.5 and 5.0 carbs is in the jetting. I have a digital vernier and personally verified the carb and manifold bore sizes. See: 6 hp outboard? posts #3&9 for more details.

It might even be possible to get them higher, the 6hp carb definitely bolts on, I haven't confirmed the bore size but the jets are bigger again according to parts lists. I doubt that the 82cc engine with 6hp carb puts out the full 6hp like the 123cc design with same carb. Smaller models in both classes appear regulated by fuel alone, it's not risky to run a four stroke lean like it would be with a two stroke.

The 2.2 and 3.3 are two strokes and the smaller sibling is limited by throttle position having a longer carb slide and shorter throttle travel. See: Mariner / Mercury / Tohatsu 2.2hp - 3.3hp outboard posts #5&7.

i have fitted a 6hp carb on my 3.5hp mariner haven't had it in the water to try it out yet but it runs lovely in the barrel of water .and its cured the initial flat spot that it had with the standard carb

Universal truth. Extra hp always increases rpm that's why you increase the propeller pitch and size to compensate and the max rpm of the engine is not exceeded.

If you're referring to the 2.2hp two stroke it's really a 3.3 running at part throttle. The max revs will be the same if it is fitted with a smaller pitch prop or one with less blade area.

Had a good nose at one in Turbodiesel's workshop a few years back. Someone had brought it in for repair. It was nearly new and ready for the bin.

Don't bother. Design is so bad that I'm surprised they even run.

Thanks, yeah after a bit more digging I've come to the conclusion they're not worth bothering with.
I have a 3.3 2 stroke that is absolutely mint but just not enough. I'll wait a few months and try to pick up a 5 or 6 2 stroke 👍

For what it's worth, I have a hyfong 6hp. It's been a reasonably good motor in the 6 years I've owned it.
I now have an old 9.9 evinrude which is much better for our needs.
As you're quite close to us, you're welcome to try the hyfong out if you're happy to leave me a deposit for it. If you like it, I might consider selling although plan was to keep it as a spare as some parts are rare for the evinrude now.

I have purchased 4 Evinrudes this year. Phenominal Machines.

If you like the motor and plan to keep it. Buy a parts motor for $100-$200 . It will save you in the long run.

That's true . This year, prices have been crazy.

Your best bet to score a deal would be to drive a couple hours away. Less demand.

Most people aren't willing to drive.
