Simrad RD68

Anybody any views on this radio? Fitted one to a Ribeye on Friday and it looked pretty good with the flush mount kit. If I'm not mistaken it is the same one used on the simulator for DSC VHF course?

RIBase
I have had 3 now (one per boat though!).
Always been quite happy. Buttons a bit small. Screen a bit small.

Current unit emits error beeps (undocumented) and will go back for fixing under Simrads praiseworthy repair/replace program.
However they dont reply to Tech Support e-mails AT ALL ("We get too many viruses coming in that way Sir, so we dont use the Internet much" Huh. How does that work then?).

To be fair in 7 years of having and using this model, this is the only problem I have ever had. But if you asked me right now, I would be much tempted by the ICOM 601.

I have the RD68 on my boat, but the display has all but faded! Heard this has happened on others.

Good job us here at Icom don't have the same policy
We deal with a fair amount of sales and tech support by e-mail.
Seems a funny way to be in this day and age.
After all it is the age of the world wide net!

I had a poor response from SIMRAD over the phone when I called them! Unlike Garmin - fantastic customer service! Can't comment on ICOM.

Hi Paul,
RD68 is similar to the one used on the PC during your course. The simulator version is split units (i.e separate VHF & DSC Controller) but the functions are the same as the combined unit (basically).
I have had 2 RD68's and both have had problems with the display, the 7.2 faded and the 5.8m RD68 has had problems as wetterthebetter has stated.
The current model I have got the Icom M601 is by far the best unit I have had so far! That's the one on the 6.5 Ribcraft which you dod the L2 on.
The Icom is waterproof (1m for 30mins) and the Simrad is splashproof!

p.s. have some good photos of you on the course that day!
