Yamaha 90 Cutting Out

Had the small boat out over the weekend (Ribcraft 5.85 with a Yam 90 2 stroke). As a bit of background, this boat has always seemed a little under powered / over-propped as with a decent load of divers and kit on board, we only get 4400 at WOT and approx 25 knts.

Anyway, 3 or 4 times over the weekend, the engine cut out whilst running flat out at full throttle. The cut out was instantaneous, no spluttering, as if someone had thrown a swith (so suspect electrical). Fortunately, and slightly oddly, the the engine would start back up and run completely normally as soon as the ignition switch was turned, making a diagnosis of the problem difficult.

Anyone had anything like this before?

David

It may be worth checking the main fuse in the engine to see if it or the holder is corroding and the vibration causing a break in the circuit? We had a problem on our club's old Yam and I seem to recollect it was an in-line glass fuse/ holder and it was only held together by the rubber shroud.

Yep go with that. Also had trouble with kill chord switches -usually the wiring behind the switch, or the ignition switch itself.
