RIBase
Steering shouldn’t be heavy on a Yamaha 25hp. Is this engine new to you? I also assume you mean doel fins rather than a trim tab? Normally you only get trim tabs on larger boats.

Also rule out that the outboard isn’t seized with dried out grease. There should be grease nipple points on the outboard leg. Yamaha 25hp can normally turn on sixpence with bit of throttle. Great engines.

It's fine when off the plane but hard to turn when on the plane there's a black finn on the underside of the gearbox that has different marks on it for adjusting it I believe it's something to do with propeller torque

The tab shouldn't make much difference to be honest, sounds like either a problem with the steering bushes or possibly lack of grease, could also be a trim issue or height issue. Maybe try playing with the trim angle & check the height of av plate relative to the hull

In that case & assuming it doesnt have a steering friction adjustment then I'd look at trim & height being the issue

Hi Scooby, I think in this instance a picture of the "trim tab" or is it a "torque tab" may help.
If it's an after market fitment I can't think of any reason why you can't take it off and see if that improves things.

The fin your talking about is intended to offset any tendency for the steering to wander to one side or the other. Even if it was miles off it wouldn't cause heavy steering it would just tend to pull to one side. They are often the anode for the engine so even the manufacturers didn't put much faith in them making them deliberately corrode away.
