Water tube seal

Hi all i have a 2002 Mercury 60 efi bigfoot and have just replaced the upper water tube seal, but i have noticed that the seal protrudes about 2mm above the surface of the midsection flat.
When i fit the adapter plate and gasket it does not lay flat because of this protrusion and therefore i cannot see how it will make a water tight seal.
I have checked the serial number of the seal and it is correct, would be grateful for any advice on this, thanks.

How does the new seal compare to the old one?
Exactly the same or are there differences?

Hi it's exactly the same, from looking at a couple of you tube videos it seems that they all stand proud.I suspect that when the bolts are torqued up it will compress the seal flat, the M 6 x 55 allen bolt is torqued to 155 pounds which is quite a lot of pressure. Thanks for your reply.
