new outboard install

hi looking to get some of the communities advice- help on installing a new outboard on my new 14 foot rib boat.

I'll first show what I have done to this point hoping everybody can see my pics. I've bought a console and added a fire extinguisher box and today installed the steering.

so my question is about installing the new outboard I am waiting on the arrival of a new honda bf50, so looking for info like if the plastic stock plate on the transom should be replaced or even can it be used as it looks kinda cheap.

pics show my 9.9 it will not be used on this boat ignore it. I'm curious if i need some sort of reinforcement or plate of any sort for strength, also question why the top of the transom has a 1/2" lip on the top ( hope you can see this in pics) transom says it can hold 399lbs new Honda is 216lbs if I remember correct. also transom is 1.5" thick and 2" thick on the top lip.

thanks for any help in advance.

I'd keep the stock transom but remove it, put on marine ply to same template width, coating in few coats of epoxy to weather proof, then put transom plate on top to effectively sandwich so outboard saddle sits flush. Use a stainless steel penny washers and fixing bolts. After drilling holes (use Sikaflex) to coat then push bolts through.

ok this sounds like a plan I will see if I can find some marine plywood locally. I'm in canada so far with a quick Google search it looks like I can only buy in 4x8 sheets starting at $70 each. I'll do some searching see if I can find a cutoff as I dont really want that much left over. thanks for the advise Spartacus.

You will probably find the 50 will have a cutaway that fits over the lip and you dont need do anything however if you do need a spacer then a ply or plastic packer will do
Some people use those hard plastic chopping boards to good effect for this purpose

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161198005566
Something like this zero maintenance and substantially cheaper than a sheet of ply

Had a quick look at the BF50 and the saddle looks pretty standard. Good call regards the nylon chopping board, absolutely maintenance free. EBay has polypropylene as another option in different thicknesses. https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/40072172819...26ad98fffea586

ok thanks guys this is much easier to obtain and much much cheaper option. also I will wait for the new outboard to arrive as I'll see if it works as is first before doing a bunch of work that may not be needed. if I do ad a cutting board or polypropylene do I use sikaflex on the entire board or just around the bolts? also what type of sikaflex is recommended? i see they sell a few different versions.

thanks for all the help Ryan.

If you zoom into the pictures posted above you can see that the top of the bracket is scalloped away for stress relief it may be enough to accomodate the overhang
If your using sikaflex id just do the bolts to prevent water ingress into the holes if you do the whole spacer youll never get it of if you ever want to
