Missing voltage regulator

I have a Merc 90 (3 cyl) and its missing the voltage regulator.

Anyone know what the alternator output is rated at in amps?

Its a mid nineties model. Exact year unknown. Engine cover is the clam shell type.

Im taking a guess that its the 9amp output stator that yours has. But i would need to check when im at work for definate.

The stators were changed and are now fitted with a 16 amp stator ( red ) the origonal one's are black, the black one's are not available anymore, so if you need a replacement regulator get the higher rated one as if you need to replace the stator later you will not have to replace the regulator.

Thanks for that. Just been out and had a look. The flywheel is red and the stator coils are black. So it sounds like a 9 amp.

The part you need is.... Part number 815279A2. Not cheap either!!.

On my old Merc 150 V6 with a 16amp stator, it just had a rectifier. When it failed, I replaced it with a bridge rectifier from RS. Since this is only a 9 amp stator, I'm wondering whether a 5 quid rectifier might also be a good substitute here too.

Lead acid batteries require a constant voltage (13.8-14.2) to charge. As it reaches full charge it should float at the charge voltage. On mine the battery voltage rises to 16.5v after about 5 minutes. It has a small diamond shaped pack which is the rectifier and given the fact it stays at 16.5v may have a regulator built in or may be the peak voltage output of the alternator. Not sure.
One thing is for certain after a long run the battery gets really quite warm and gasses off quite actively.
I have been thinking about this and I am going to design and build one with a 20 amp capacity (200% rating) at 13.8v using a PWM regulator. Tricky bit is making it small enough to fit.
Before I do I will enquire at B&O.
