2007, so just coming out of extended warrenty.

A dealer can plug in the laptop and tell you % of hours are various RPM, always interesting (also if its ever hit the limiter).

You need to know service history, plugs (and everything else) very expensive on these motors. Doubt they have been done inside 4 years. Been serviced anually?

I'm avoiding the question since I dont know the answer, but trying to be helpful!!

Doesn't sound silly, but when they go wrong they go seriously wrong, so I wouldn't be buying it unless I was comfortable with the possibility of coughing up say £1500 if something bad did develop in the next couple of years. I guess at 15, that might be even harder for you to come up with than the initial purchase price. If its for your "round England attempt" then unless you are trying to break a speed record then 225 horses drinking petrol is just going to add to your logistics problems and costs.

Don't forget the oil !!

OPTI's are seriously oil thirsty and I would expect the oil to be about 20% of your 'fuel' running costs......

If going long distances you need to either take the oil with you or be 100% sure it will be available at your fuel stops !!

Oh... i thought they were good on fuel
i need 175hp plus really for my boat and 225 will only give me about 40 knots.
the other option was 175 suzuki.
I will probably end up taking the sea fox round britain, the add space would be cheaper and easier to sell.

I'm not so sure....if your putting £100 of petrol and £25 of oil at the same time then something is wrong. Mine was more like £100 of petrol to £3 ( if that) of oil....

With a 10L oil tank you'd be filling it every day which would be daft.

There was a brand new unused 2005 225hp XL for sale a few weeks ago for £5995 so I would have said it was about right. Mind you a new one is £10000 or there abouts...

Mine's done about a litre of oil on 70 litres of gas at the moment.....

(Not including the gallon I emptied all over the deck!)

Running hard I think that they run about 50:1 or a bit less.

50 litres of petrol is about £75, 1 litre of oil about £10

Fuel Price

We pay around 88p / litre for petrol and the oil is £40 / 5 litre can when bought in bulk my estimate of 20% was probably about right for my costings.

Of course in the UK the % becomes less as your fuel is way too scary

However the overall £ / hours running will be a significant expense on oil alone compared to a four stroke.

Back to the original post though...... a fair price to start negotiating from, the OPTI sounds great with plenty of growl. Repairs can be expensive as mentioned.

"good on fuel" is all relative.
I gotta cringe a little when I hear a 15yo complaining that 225hp will "only" give them 40 knots

Not sure on the mix ratio of the opti but a standard 2 stroke is say 100-1 so that means 100 litres of fuel (which costs say £130) needs 1 litre of oil, which costs what ? Around £12 I guess.

So that makes the oil almost a 10% costing of your fuel, or is that too simple to be correct ?

EDIT - oh there's a second page to this thread with similar posts :facepalm

You do realise that sitting at full speed a 225 opti is going to be burning something like 70L an hour in fuel. Assuming you are doing 5 hour legs (any more at that speed will be pretty tough going unless you get a good boat / great weather), that means you would need 350L of fuel every day. Half your stops won't have petrol at the dockside so you will need to find a way of collecting that sort of volume of fuel!
