Mercury 75 2-stroke gearbox help!

I recently knackered my gearbox and a marine engineer has told me it will be cheaper to replace the lower unit of the outboard motor. From my understanding it's an 87' 2-stroke 75hp Mercury, and that I can replace it with any 75 - 90 - 115 provided that it's a 2-stroke and made before 2002. Can anyone confirm this or point me in the right direction?

Many thanks,

Charles
