Gear change

Hi
Mariner 2 stroke. Very difficult to change gear.
So it’s not the control box or the cables. I disconnected them and they move freely.
The mechanism that the gear (fwd/neutral/Rev)under the hood is very hard to move by hand.
Any ideas? Is this a usual wear and tear component or something that is €€

Thank you all once again for your thoughts and help

Assuming the two are related (as in the skeg incident), then drop the lower unit.

Could be the dig clutch. With the lower unit off you should be able to operate the clutch by hand with minimal resistance. Could be Teleflex gear selector linkage is just worn, or the idle speed is running to high? On the engine side do the Teleflex cables seem tight?

Drop the lower unit anyway, that tells you what you're dealing with. If it checks out okay, then look at the cables. If they run under deck they could be corroded or simply need adjusted.

Assuming you're trying to do this with the engine switched off have you tried turning the prop by hand as you operate the selector?

Thanks for you comments.
I am going to drop the lower unit to have a closer look. I will let you know how I get on
