Hi Julian,
I keep an eye on Mike Garside's recommended site: http://www.ecmwf.int/products/foreca...msl_uv850_z500
It's based on computer modelling, but is useful nonetheless!
If we'd been on the water earlier enough last Saturday, and with another boat, it would have been perfect for a raid on Alderney. You never know, it could be just as good this weekend?
Sorry no pics from Weymouth from me (John Kennett breathes sigh of relief) we were a bit busy practising our MOB!!

Good question!
The charts show wind gradients, so the closer the contours, the stronger the wind. Yellow means flippin' windy and green means don't go out on your boat!
But I'm also cheating by looking at some other sites. BBC states 18mph winds today (inland), shipping forecast predicts F6-7 for Dover-Wight-Portland-Plymouth.
BBC forecast for the weekend is wind decreasing to 13-14mph inland, so possibly F6 offshore, but there's a yellow patch near Cherbourg on the ecmwf site for Saturday, so could be very windy around Alderney.
They'll probably publish completely different charts tomorrow and make complete rubbish of this!

Crikey that kept you all quiet this afternoon
Julian - looks like you might have for or five boats out...
you, me(?), Andre, Peter in Loose Cannon, (and maybe Paradiddle/Desperadoes/En-Suite?)
I've taken the doel-fins off our outboard after someone said to me at the weekend "You want to get those *#@$ing things taken off, they're a load of #&*@!!" - so I hope to find out the definitive answer about whether they are any good or not. Also new prop to try

Exactly. That's why I'm not going to do that. I'll run with the fins removed and the old prop first of all. Don't know know when I'll change the prop.

Sat 18th Oct
Morning Richard
Yep its looks like there could well be a few of us out as long as I can get free from work which im sure wont be a problem. Weather still looks healthy etc.
I used doel fins on our scorpion 7.5 and thought they were really good. Seemed to improve performance etc.
I'll think of a place for us to all meet and get back to you shortly.
Julian

Hi Charles
This is a very tempting offer , I will keep a eye on the weather and see what people want to do etc. Im torn between spending the day doing maintenance on the boat or getting out on the water, think the getting out on the water is winning at the moment.
I'll keep you informed
Julian

Springbox Rugby
Hi Charles,
As if you would get any smart alec comments about South African Rugby
Julian, I will be out crewing for Andre on Seahawk. We don't have the speed to do Alderney & Back in a Day. So will stick with our original plan of Round the Island. If you do go enjoy the trip its a blast.
Cheers.

Would have loved to go to Alderney but must be back by 4PM and there is no chance we could keep up with you big guys. Perhaps another time with Prime Rib II along side.
Andre
PS for sure we are going round the I.O.W and expect to leave Littlehampton about 9:30 AM stopping off at Cowes ETA 11:00, Yarmouth , Ventnor
anyone else around
Andre
