ice cream and chips - Torquay, 29th August 2020

On Sunday the 30th August the iconic Cowes - Torquay race will be taking place.

Those of us involved will be in town (Torquay) all weekend so it seems sensible to have a run to collect some of Dorset's finest ice cream.

We will leave the Town Quay at 11.30 on Saturday the 29th, heading East towards Lyme Regis.

It's a good distance at around 25nm so we'll take a couple of stops on route for flask action.

Once in Lyme an ice cream or fish and chips is to be had (both are superb) before we head back for a large gin on the quay in Torquay.

I wonder where that idea came from

Yes, we had a cracking run from Torquay to Lyme last summer, great coastline, one of my favourite S Devon (and Dorset just) runs.

Maybe some of the Teignmouth / Exmouth boats will join on the way.

Some random Northerner dragged me that way last year - and a superb day was had.

If the weather is half as good this year it'l be great - and you're lead boat on this one

Less of the "Northerner" else you'll upset the real Notherners - and no I'm not going to say where "North" starts. It's well past my West Country patch.

Just because you get a nose bleed and dizzy past Exeter

Torbay- Lyme is a good run, I do love the coastline

To be fair one of the best in that area, but you do pay for the privilege. Brixham is cheaper but I think tide restricted.

Where as Torquay is available at all states and it plenty wide enough with good depth.

Torquay slip(Beacon Quay) is good, - 2 boats can launch recover same time and there is pontoon to tie up on. Can park trailer on quay, car in multi-storey above quay Can get busy. Cost c. £25-£30 to launch - car parking extra.

Brixham slip is very steep and there's nowhere to tie up apart from some steps on the breakwater accessible c. +/-3 hours of high water. Pot luck whether you're asked for launching fees. Can leave trailer at top of slip... beware HT on springs if leaving trailer. Car-parking on site.

Cheers, I think I’ll go with Torquay given my limited experience of slip launching.

Sounds like a great short blast, I’m in.

Hi Andy.

With the cancellation of the CTC race are you still thinking of going ahead with this?

Shall look forward to it. Hopefully better weather than last time at Torquay.

Just need to recover from the shock of the 100 hour service cost.

Suzuki 150.

£650 for the service.
£170 for the lift!

Not having a trailer limits me to a dealer at a waterside location. It's possible to get it done cheaper, but only if I can get the engine to them.

It's also worth trying to plan ahead if possible as most where booked up for quite some time.

This is at Darthaven, and to be fair to them the guy I dealt with couldn't have been more helpfull. Booked me for the first lift of the day in the hope that the boats back in the water by the end of the day although I'm not overly optimistic on that happening. Also took onboard my concerns over lifting the rib in slings and talked through how they lift some of the ribs in the Marina. Fingers crossed on that side of things.

Hopefully next service I'll be more organised and use Lewis Marine at the Dry stack in Plymouth.

Been round to Dartmouth a couple of times in the last two weeks only to find nowhere to moor with walk ashore access. This is midweek.

They don't 'appear' to be allowing rafting, so might be worth checking with the harbour master if that is the case.

Only place for walk ashore for a 6m+ boat is the seasonal South Embankment pontoon just above the lower ferry by Dartmouth Yacht Club. Otherwise they'll direct you you a to visitor pontoon even for short stay then have to use the river taxi to get ashore & back.

If you are 2+up, could always drop 1 ashore to stretch legs, grab food then eat on the boat, at a vacant mooring or swap over if comfort break needed.

Another option is cruise up to Dittisham, pick up a mooring close to the Dittisham / Greenway Ferry run and give the ferry a shout - literally. They normally pick you up & drop you at the Dittisham pontoon for a quid.

Ferryboat pub or Anchor Stone Cafe for lunch.

You can walk ashore from the outer visitors pontoon just South of the higher ferry or from the short stay pontoon at Darthaven and take the ferry across to Dartmouth. The problem is that it's pot luck on finding a space.

They say you can't reserve a space, but still hang up 'no mooring signs' for no apparent reason.

Last time in there I had a chat with the guy in the harbour rib about finding a space and basically got just a shrug and it is what it is response. Guess it might have been different if I was looking for an overnight stay rather than a just a couple of hours.

It'll be fine - Lyme Regis pontoons for the Ice Cream side of things then we'll see what happens Sunday - can always go to Salcombe or as you say Dittisham (I prefer it there anyhow.

Plenty of space in Lyme Regis on Monday.

Well on the pontoons anyway!
