9th annual Pasty run - 5th April

The 9th Annual Pasty run will take place in 2021 on Monday 5th April.

The plan this year will be to leave the breakwater fort (Plymouth) at 10.30 (rising tide).

We'll head East, past the Lyner, Burgh Island and Hope Cove before arriving at Salcombe around 11.15.

However once into Salcombe they'll be no stopping. We're going to head North and keep going! 3 miles later we find Kingsbridge - the location for the 2021 pasty.

The basin is home to a range of wildlife and interesting features so should add a nice final leg.

Once coffee and a pasty, or a beer, is consumed we'll re group for the journey back to Plymouth or Torbay for those joining from there.

HW is 12.30 and passage is available until 1500 so I'd be looking to depart around 1400 for the journey back to ensure we have some leeway.

Those early can get tea, coffee and cake at Bovisands whilst waiting for the jump off and I suspect we'll get a possy running over from Torquay to join us too

As it's a Bank Holiday should people fancy making a long weekend of it, I suspect we can

What's the parking like for several RIBs at Kingsbridge?

Not been there myself yet, but Google shows plenty of options and the harbour guide says plenty of space.

As usual I'll have a discussion with harbour masters nearer the time to confirm which visitors berths they want us on.

Would be worth checking whether Salcombe and / or Kingsbridge Harbour Authorities will be welcoming visitors on Easter Mon. Wider restrictions aren't lifted until 12th.

They may concerned about numbers.

I'm not fussed at pottering further up the shallow estuary when there's a good pasty to be had in Salcombe, so we could split into 2 smaller groups for the actual pasty.

That conversation is due to take place, I have agreed with them that I'd ring mid March to see how it's going.

Salcombe pasties are superb so no worries on a two stage feed - one in each could be good

I have a feeling they won't be welcoming on 5 April, I don't think they will open to visiting boats until, after12 April, but let's see.

It may be a "bring your own" pasty run

I've spoken with the harbour authority today - so long as the road map stays as it is, they are ready and willing for us to arrive, berth, feed and leave

Fingers crossed for decent weather....the pasty run dates have a reputation for being less than ideal

Assuming all goes to plan and I get back on the water on 1 April, if it's good weather I'll run down and meet up with the Plymouth boats somewhere West of Bolt Head for the run into Salcombe. Happy to cruise with any other boats from Torbay / Dartmouth.

Hi all - not been to Salcombe by Rib yet - is there a walk off visitor pontoon like Fowey or are we talking visitor buoys ? Same at Kingsbridge? Reason I ask is when I have been there it seems as if it’s only Sibs and tenders for the Wafis

Morning - both have walk in pontoons, if there is space. You can usually get on at Salcombe with a little wait on bank holidays. A beast your size will be slightly more restricted but usually ok.

Worst case is they ask you to use a bouy and the boat boys take you in.

Never been to Kingsbridge yet, first time but harbour master thinks they'll be plenty of space, just need to check on CH14 on arrival.

To be fair we've had everything from abandon, to hail stones and rail through to burn the skin off sun.

Always a challenge being early in the season, but it's what makes it fun

We moved away from Easter due to the unpredictable weather, but with lockdown easing ( a little bit) it seemed a sensible time.

If it's grim there is a plan B for a follow up date that doesn't clash with

I've been looking at the chart, and I don't think I want to be 3 miles up river from Salcombe on an ebb tide

It dries to to 2.4, m above chart datum in the "channel" to Kingsbridge. HT on 5th is Neaps with a height of 4.0m That doesn't leave a lot or room for error, or much clearance under the skeg.

Leaving an hour + after HW with a 20 min slow run to reach any depth, might end up being a tad embarrassing

Call me Mr Unadventurous, but I think I'll stop short and visit the pasty shop in Salcombe.

I'd suggest for those who want to venture up to Kingsbridge it would be better to go up on the flood and be there well before before HT. That would mean starting & arriving at least an hour earlier.

If anyone thinks I've misread the chart and knows Kingsbridge is accessible 2 hours (and run time out of the creek) after HW with 1m (at least) draft, I'm happy to be corrected.

The bit around Gerstone Point looks like it has some very shallow parts, though the channel itself might be ok.

Oh yea of little faith...........

But happy to go with the flow especially as it's not some where I've ever been. I used the harbour guide on times suitable for navigation but some local input would be great.

If it looks dicey no worries with holding at Salcombe or if we're ahead of our selves a quick run up, coffee and then back to Salcombe - happy to play it by ear.

I'm not one to hinder any intrepid ribbers from venturing deep into the NW recesses of the Salcombe estuary.

My appetite is somewhat tempered by the risk of sitting on a mudbank for 10 hours and a night run home due to misjudging the tide by a couple of minutes

If this does happen to someone, I will of course lend "moral support" from the deep water safety (0.3m) at No1 Buoy (for a few minutes at least) and capture the moment for posterity

Hate to admit in public but 15 years age it caught me up at kingsbridge and me and the kids had a fun 8 hours waiting for the tide to return in very hot sunshine. Ebbs seriously quickly...Locals are very welcoming though, many younger ones waving at us in a (local I assume) up and down motion

Yes they are a bit like that West of the Dart....the 6th finger normally gives it away

You wouldn't get behaviour that slightly further sourh at Salcombe...although I bet not many were locals

Don't think hot sunshine will be a problem on Monday week....as I said I'm very happy to give moral support from No1 buoy in about 3 ft of water

I think there is a reason the buoyage stops there!
